The Big Bopper was only twenty-seven years old when his career was cut tragically short by the legendary plane crash which also took the lives of Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. But J.P. Richardson—known to his millions of fans as The Big Bopper—had already carved out a major spot for himself in the history of rock-and-roll. Born October 14, 1931 in Sabine Pass, Texas, J.P. attended public schools in Beaumont and began working as a DJ while still in college. He quickly became the top DJ in the region, was named No. 1 Disc Jockey in numerous surveys, and assumed the name "The Big Bopper" for his shows.
He eventually became Program Director of KTRM in Beaumont, and began to try his hand at songwriting. J.P. sent some demonstration tapes to Harold "Pappy" Daily, veteran distributor in Houston, Texas, and operator of Mercury-Starday Records. Daily liked what he heard, and signed Richardson as a writer and singer J.P. made four country recordings for Mercury, which were released under the name "Jape Richard-son': Richardson's radio expertise convinced him that rock-and-roll was the next coming thing in the music business, and he began writing in that emerging genre. Again, he presented demo tapes to Pappy Daily, and again Daily was impressed. Mercury Records released Chantilly Lace by The Big Bopper in August of 1958, and the record quickly became a national best-seller J.P. continued to write and record during the whirlwind days of his new-found stardom. He recorded the self-penned Little Red Riding Hood, and Big Bopper's Wedding and they were both big records for the DJ turned recording star. His touring increased and it looked as if there was no stopping The Bopper.
On February 2, 1959, The Big Bopper, Richie Valens and Buddy Holly boarded a Beechcraft Bonanza which Holly had chartered to take the singers to Fargo, North Dakota. Original plans called for Holly bandmembers Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup to be aboard the fateful flight. But when arrangements were discussed among performers on the package show, The Bopper and Valens asked to be included. J.P. approached Waylon Jennings, explaining that he'd caught cold on the tour and feared a lengthy bus ride would worsen his condition. Waylon agreed to give up his seat on the aircraft. Tommy Allsup and Richie Valens tossed a coin to see who would ride in the plane. Valens won the toss. The subsequent crash took the lives of three of rock-and-roll's superstars. At the time, Valens had the second best-selling record in the country, the two-sided hit, Donna/LaBamba.
The Big Bopper's Chantilly Lace had been on the charts six months, and Holly had emerged as one of the founders of rock music. The recent biographical film of Valens' life, "LaBamba" has resurrected the final days of these early rock superstars, and music such as Chantilly Lace. The Big Bopper's best known hits are included in this selection, but give a listen to some of his lesser known songs. You'll understand more fully the contribution of the man and his music, and the tragedy of that February night in 1959.
