Description
This is a great copy of "The Beatles vs. The Four Seasons" LP.
Vee Jay Records number DX 30.
This album was yet another clever marketing move by Vee Jay Records, who in 1964 found themselves in possession of 16 tracks by the hottest act in entertainment, The Beatles. Vee Jay managed to produce many albums and singles using those 16 tracks.
In this particular album they combined the "greatest hits" of their two top-selling rock acts. Vee Jay didn't even bother to press new LPs to go with this new cover, instead they used their existing "Golden Hits Of The Four Seasons" LP (Vee Jay number VJLP 1065) and "Introducing The Beatles" LP (Vee Jay number VJLP 1062).
Since this was a double album (with a higher than usual list price) and since it also contained no new material this LP was not a big seller, making it one of the rarest Beatles LPs released in the US in 1964.
Also the back cover was designed as a "scorecard" and it enocuraged the owner to write on it to indicate their favorite songs. Hence there are not many clean back covers surviving today, adding to the collectability of this album.
The cover is very nice with no writing on it at all. There are a few minor small splits along the spine. The bottom seam is very nice.
The spine is fully legible including the record number.
There is a push in the top left corner and the other corners all have minor wear.
Overall though the cover is a real nice VG+.
The vinyl is really great on both LPs. The Beatles LP is VG++. The Four Seasons LP is VG to VG+. There is no writing on any of the labels.
For those who care this Introducing The Beatles record is number VJ 1062(2).MR2B from page 133 of Bruce Spizer's fantastic Vee Jay Beatles book.
The side one trail-off area has the following markings: Delta 6307, a crossed-off MR in a circle, a hand-etched 63-3402 and a number 2 in a circle. The side two trail-off area has the following markings: Delta 6307X, an MR in a circle, a hand-etched 63-3403 and a number 4 in a circle. The Four Seasons trail-off areas have the Audio Matrix and the MR in a circle marks.
