The Roland Rennie Collection

Coming up for the foreseeable future, is a record collection that is quite unique. It is the personal collection of the late great Mr. Roland Rennie who was the managing director at Polydor records in the UK during the 1960's and 1970's. There are some unique records, including 7 inch singles and LP's, along with Acetates, Demo's/Promo's and Factory sample records. Most are very early issues, if not the first to be produced. All of the main Polydor artists are present, including international and UK labels connected to Polydor.

In 1950, a young man named Roland Rennie joined EMI records in Hayes, Middlesex, UK. Roland quickly grew with the company and saw its success mushroom manyfold during the late 1950's and early 1960's.

During his 12 years at EMI, he held many positions and eventually became the right hand man to EMI managing director, L.G. Wood in 1959, and was closely involved with major affiliation switches by major American firms. He oversaw the changes from British Decca to EMI and of Liberty and United records. His experience would put him in the top 6 of most knowledgeable executives in the industry at that time.

In 1962, Roland was a member of the team reponsible for the conception of the 'Stateside' label, which became the outlet in the UK and many other countries for: Scepter, Vee Jay, Diamond, Swan, Laurie; and a dozen other U.S. ensigns.

In addition, under instruction from Sir George Martin, Roland was also the person responsible for The Beatles' entrance onto the American stage, and was directly involved in negotations for them to appear on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time.

In 1965, he left EMI to take up the position of managing director at Polydor records in the UK, and directly oversaw the signings to the label of: The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Bee Gees, Sonny & Cher, Wilson Pickett, Ben E King, Otis Redding, The Drifters, Joe Tex, Patti and her Belles, Don Covay, Barbara Lewis and Soloman Burke, to name but a few.

On offer today, a 1st press factory sample of the 1967 UK 7" MONO EP by The Beatles titled "Magical Mystery Tour" on the black and silver parlophone labels. The records come housed in their original wavy-top inners and story book with blue centre pages.

Side 1 condition:

The vinyl starts beautifully and plays through with no noticeable surface noise throughout. There are no jumps, no sticks and no pops from start to finish. This is the best example that I have ever heard on vinyl, simply wonderful playback. 9/10

The surface has an excellent shine with only a few light surface hairlines, but nothing moderate or heavy, the disc is without any moderate or major rubs or scratches. 8/10

The label on side 1 is excellent with no fading to the background and only a few light spider trials around the center hole. The print is fantastic with no fading or wear. 8.5/10

Side 2 condition:

Side 2 plays through beautifully well with very little evidence of very light background noise. There are absolutely no sticks, no skips and no jumps throughout. This is the best example that I have ever heard on vinyl, simply wonderful playback. 9/10

The surface of the record on side 2 is similar to that as described on side 1. There are a few light lines to the surface but no moderate or heavy rubs, marks or scratches. 8/10.

The label on side 2 is also excellent with no fading to the background. The print is near perfect with no fading or wear and there are only a few light spider trials or lines of that nature around the center hole. 8.5/10

Side 3 condition:

Side 3 also plays beautifully, It is stunning. There is very little evidence of light background noise and there aren't any loud pops, no and no sticks. 9/10

There is very little surface wear at all. The vinyl is, again, spotlessly clean and also obvious that it has been played very few times. There aren't any scratches or noticeable rubs, only a few of the lightest of wispy hairlines. Wonderful. 9/10.

The label on side 3 is excellent. There is very little fading and all text is perfect. There are a few very light spider trails around the centre hole but nothing else which is evident. 9/10

Side 4 condition:

Equally, Side 4 plays wonderfully. From the second you lay the needle down. The sound produced is beautiful and isn't spoilt by interference from surface noise. A brilliant listen experience. 9/10

There is very little surface wear at all. The vinyl is, again, spotlessly clean and also obvious that it has been played very few times. There aren't any scratches or noticeable marks, only one or two of the lightest of wispy hairlines. Wonderful. 9/10

The label on side 4 with a factory sample sticker is also excellent with very little fading to the background. The print is near perfect with no fading or wear and there are only a few light spider trials or lines of that nature around the center hole. 8.5/10

The wavy-top inner sleeves are in very good condition with no splits or tears, very little creasing and light discolouration. 8/10

The 24 outer story booklet with blue centre pages is in very good plus with no loose or missing pages. The blue centre pages are firmly attached with the original staples, which are free of rust or wear.

Each page is in clean condition with no writing or tears on any page. The front has an excellent surface but with a little bit of perimeter wear. The spine has a great shape and is fully bound, but there is some light corner rubbing present. The rear is excellent with a little bit of perimeter wear. 8/10
