In December, 1968 after Capitol sold the record club edition rights to Longines, the company quit supplying albums to the club. Instead, Longines arranged for the manufacture of Capitol albums using cover artwork and label backdrops supplied by Capitol. It’s hard to explain why among all of the existing club issues, this issue of “The Beatles’ Second Album” is the rarest one. Without any exaggeration it’s really impossible to find. But if you’re lucky after all, then it will most likely be the issue with a later cover variation without the record club “ST8-2080” catalog number in the upper right-hand corner on the front, and most certainly, it won’t be the earliest cover with the “B Longines ST8-2080” vertical print along the mouth at the top right corner on the front as seen on this currently listed copy's cover. This copy most likely is a very early circa early 1969 pressing which was manufactured right after the record club edition rights to the catalog of Capitol Records were transferred to Longines. As on all of the club issues, the top left corner of this copy’s cover contains three black /// hash marks that differentiate record club records from commercial ones. Another typical characteristic of a record club cover is the absence of the “File Under” print and the large dot in the upper right-hand corner, which on this copy’s cover were replaced with the unique record club only “ST8-2080” catalog number. The back cover doesn’t have the Longines’ factory designator number “16” in the lower right-hand corner. The number comes across quite often on this issue’s cover and the fact that it’s absent on this copy’s cover makes it even more unique. 1st print Longines black multi-color band labels with the 1” pressing ring, record club “ST-8-2080” catalog number and “"Manufactured under license from Capitol Records, Inc., Hollywood and Vine Streets, Hollywood, California" rim text. Very early record club Longines heavyweight pressing with the full matrix numbers: Side 1 – ST 1 82080 W1 2 1 / Side 2 – ST 2 82080 W1 2. The album comes with the original record club plain white paper inner sleeve. This impossible to find record club edition copy comes with an original "Official Beatles Fan Club" 2-Sided 20" x 30" poster in a still sealed unused condition (Please see the listing's last image which shows a stock photo depicting the poster inside) in addition to a rare Fan Club black and white 6¾ x 5½" portrait photo insert.

I grade the cover as somewhere between Very Good Plus and Excellent Minus. The front and back cover has some light hint of ring wear along with some age shelf wear. It seems the spine of this cover had some slight issue as we see some signs of professional restoration done to it with the use of a very high-quality matte paper, most likely archival. It's beautifully done and the spine has a fully readable text. The original plain white paper inner sleeve is in Near Mint condition. The original "Official Beatles Fan Club" poster remains sealed and is in new unused condition only having a light stain on one of the sides and some light age shelf wear. The original insert is in great vintage condition only having a few age discoloration spots on the reverse side. I grade the vinyl as strong Very Good. It retains its factory gloss but has some light surface hairlines and marks as well as light scuffs from the inner sleeve. However, none of the marks affect the playback as the vinyl sounds amazing and doesn't have any skips or pops, just some very light occasional static that will most likely go away completely if the record is professionally cleaned using a VPI machine. The playback is graded as Excellent. The labels are very clean and in strong Very Good Plus condition only having a few light spindle marks.
