Description

The Beatles - Sgt Pepper's ‘Patents Pending’ Mono LP.

PMC 7027 – Original Black and Yellow Parlophone label.

Featuring one of the rarest known versions of this ground breaking album, an original UK pressing in 100% original condition. This RARE and unique version of this album features a very early pressing of the  sleeve that shows ‘Patents Pending’ to the rear bottom right hand corner,  only a very few of the very first post production ‘Pepper’ sleeves has this.

It is documented that the release of Sgt Pepper was somewhat of a rush, EMI and the Beatles were keen to catch the mood of the time that was  soon to be called ‘The Summer of Love’.  This version of this album confirms this rush release due to the fact that the printers of the sleeve had not agree to the ‘Patents’ of the sleeve. Very soon after the album was officially released the ‘Patents’ were agreed and ‘Patents Pending’ was removed from the sleeve. Out of interest later Stereo pressings of the sleeve did also show a ‘Patents Pending’ but this was apparently a printing error !.

CONDITION:

MAIN SLEEVE:  is in excellent condition-, the front and rear laminate has a really excellent shine. The colours on the sleeve are full and fresh and have not faded in anyway,  it features the original exposed flipback gatefold sleeve.  There are only a very few light creases here and there.  The spine is strong and clear,  the ‘er’  out of the word Pepper has been lost,  90% of the  text on the spine is clear.

The cardboard cut-out is present and is in excellent condition.

INNER SLEEVE: is the original RED/WHITE psychedelic sleeve, it is in good condition,  there are two tape repairs, one to the edge and one to the  bottom,  there is an approx 25mm (one inch) square piece of the sleeve missing to one side of the top right hand corner.

VINYL: is in very good condition, it is of the ‘heavy’, thick set vinyl, it is dark and has a high gloss, the audio is very good.  I have just played the album from start to finish and it sounded amazing, there was the odd crackle,  otherwise it  has a powerful period sound, brilliant.  The matrices no’s. are XEX 637-1 and XEX 638-1 and the  Mother/Stampers are:  ‘3 LD’ and ‘ 0 ADM’

THE LABELS:  are in very good condition,  they are bright and clean,  there is a  ‘KT’  stamp on side two.

I am using the official grading system from Record Collector Magazine.

Grading System

The seven standard condition categories and a description of what each one means are listed below:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

+  or  – :  indicates a grading in between categories.
