The Beatles Please Please Me/Ask Me Why 7” single 1963 early 1st press Red label 45-R 4983
This single was purchased by me from new on its first release in early 1963. The labels have no 'Made in Great Britain' text under the company £ sign on the right hand side and are in very good clean condition with no inscriptions. The tax code is PT 1. According to Discogs this is a first pressing. Discogs says that a ZT tax code stamped in the runout would indicate a pressing made before November 1962 (see my listing for Love Me Do). The code changed to PT from 1st January 1963 to 30th June 1963 then changed in MT and after that to KT.
The stamped matrix numbers are 7XCE 17217-1N and 7XCE 17218-1N. Also stamped are GD on side one and what looks like A on side two. The vinyl is pretty bright and I could see only a few light scratches or scuffs. These do not affect the playback. It plays very well with little discernible surface noise except on the run ins and run outs. There are no skips or jumps. I rate this as a conservative VG following the Goldmine Grading Guide.
The sleeve is the original Parlophone paper sleeve with the striped pattern and is in very good condition for its age. There are creases which I think could be carefully removed and some discolouration. There is handwritten text “Please Please Me” in the top right hand corners of each side. I remember doing this to make sure that this single didn’t get put back into the diamond pattern which houses my Love Me Do single
According to Discogs:
“In January 1963 Parlophone ceased production of its red label design. Consequently original issues of Love Me Do & Please Please Me were the only Beatles singles, released in the '60s in the UK, with these red labels.
I’ll send the single by Royal Mail Signed For® 1st Class Large Letter in a rigid cardboard protective packaging specifically designed for vinyls.
