Description
An original 3rd press on UK Parlophone label. Matrix 1N/1N. Really solid early pressing with NO 'Sold In The UK' or 'recording 1st pub'. Would have been on sale at the original height of Beatlemania - Spring '63. If you ever wanted to get as close as possible to a black and gold 1st pressing - this is the way of doing it without shelling out crazy$$$. When the new yellow and black design came into being at Parlophone it, coincidentally, occurred almost at the same time of Beatlmania. The VERY 1st copies left the plant with quite an obvious error. The new design included a large 33 speed above the 'Parlophone' logo. When the initial labels were prepared they forgot to remove the small 33 speed nearer the spindle whole. these are, in effect, a throw-back to what you would find on the very 1st black and gold copies. It's effectively a hallmark of the VERY earliest possible yellow and black design [visible on side 2 on this example]. If you wanna go earlier - you need a black and gold copy and the prices will rocket. The vinyl comes in an original Mono cover with flips - printed E J Day. We also have the original Emitex inner. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex/Vg+) In lovely condition and genuinely a really well preserved very early copy. Under close inspection I can only make out a couple of light marks per side. One does just about manage to sound toward the end of side 1 [nothing that significant really]. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with deviation in one track detailed below. Intros and inbetweens are nice and quiet and the audio comes across with excellent clarity. A well preserved near-master copy exactly what any serious collector should be hankering after. Great vibrancy and clean signal - don't be thinking that every other copy plays nice and clean like this. You might detect a few minor crackles in one brief moment per side. Even the lowkey acoustic numbers are playing nice and clean. The only one issue is the mark mentioned above which does cause 8-9 ticks in the later half of 'Ask Me Why'. Not up front really and doesn't detract that much - but audible all the same. Overall - a highly collectable and enticing rendition. Unfortunately not all original copies surface in the is kind of condition.
Cover (Ex-/Vg+) Usually found in pretty undesirable condition - but occasionally a really tidy example surfaces. And this one looks much nicer than what usually tends to turn up. Lovely flat and shiny front without much sign of ageing. What is particularly nice is that the rear has avoided most of the ageing process. Just a couple of minor foxing marks down in extreme right and slight ageing at opening edge. Flipbacks are all in excellent condition. Edge wear is relatively light for the vintage. The spine is in excellent condition 95% intact. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
