Description
What It Is: This 5 cut EP is the only release by The Bodysnatchers, an early punk band from Austin, Texas. "All selections were recorded and mixed live at Pecan Street Studio between the hours of ten pm and two am on the fourteenth day of july nineteen seventy eight". It is therefore the first independently released punk record from Austin, pre-dating the release of the Skunks "Earthquake Shake/Can't Get Loose" by several months. And what a ripper it is! They had two bass players, giving the band a wickedly heavy rhythm section that is complimented with snarling lead vocals a la Mr. Rotten (it should probably be noted that the band formed the day after they saw the Sex Pistols play at Randy's Rodeo in San Antonio). You may be familiar with "Are You Into Destruction" from Bloodstains Across Texas, but have you heard "Battle Of The Bands?" The song was penned following a "Punk Festival" in April 1978 at an unassuming venue called New Atlantis on Austin's now famous 6th Street. This is before the punk scene had really taken off and people like Biscuit and Gary Floyd were merely spectators. The only other bands in town that could be construed as "punk" were the Skunks and Violators, who of course played the New Atlantis gig. The Nervebreakers were also invited to come down from Dallas to participate in this historical "battle of the bands." And as it turns out, they went back home with the prize money. Believing the battle was rigged, the Bodysnatchers proceeded to write a pretty angst-ridden tale about their disdain for the Dallas-area legends. Side 1 includes I Want that Girl, and I'm Gonna Love Her Anyway, while side 2 includes Battle of the Bands, Are You Into Destruction, and Obsession / Depression. Details:
