Description
Just recently I bought a massive collection of 60's and 70's LPs...some are in surprisingly immaculate condition, and some are not, but the original owner (a well-respected Australian vinyl hoarder) was a fastidious collector of the styles he loved - 60's punk/garage, British invasion well-knowns [Beatles/Hollies/Dave Clark 5/Gerry & The Pacemakers/Zombies/Troggs/etc..], 70's West Coast sounds, pop-psych and he'd obviously forraged far and wide since there's a flurry of unique South American, New Zealand,Taiwanese, South African, Japanese releases amongst them all.
Here then, is one of the LPs from his collection:
ARTIST: The BEATLES -
TITLE: "PLEASE PLEASE ME" .
FORMAT: …vinyl LP…
LABEL: PARLOPHONE .
CATALOGUE #: PMC0-1202 .
DATE OF RELEASE: 17th October 1963 .
PRESSED IN: AUSTRALIA
ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING?: Yes, it is!...of the very first black and gold label issue (the one that has "Made in Australia for the Parlophone Co., Ltd. Sydney, N.S.W." around the lower rim beneath the band name) there were actually SEVEN diferent, and very minor, label variations...THIS one was confirmed as the very first - documented/rumoured as only 500 pressed - and the differences are:
1. has square brackets (not round) on the song title "ANNA [Go To Him]"
2. has a hyphen between 'Goffin' and 'King' as the songwriters of "CHAINS"
3. and most importantly, the music publishing credits/logos, to the left of the spindle hole, on Side One are in this order: LEEDS, CASTLE, TU-CON, WALLABY...and on Side Two: BELINDA, ROBERT MELLIN, LEEDS, PINCUS GILL, CASTLE
The stamped matrix numbers are:
Side 1: XEX 421-1N
Side 2: XEX 422-1N
Still has an original soft plastic inner sleeve.
=====================================================
CONDITION:
COVER: ( POOR )...as you'll be able to see in the pix, the cover has been badly torn, with parts missing, and it's been repaired as best as could be, by taping it to the outside of a plain cardboard sleeve...the front and back had been in two pieces in fact...so it's taped on all 4 sides on both the front and back...has tears, parts missing, writing on the back cover...hard to find a much worse cover, and the only reason I'm even bothering to list it is because it'd be a shame to throw out such a super rare issue...the cover is an original first flipback...
RECORD: ( G++ )...has a lot of marks...doesn't look real great...BUT...it plays beautifully!...with NOT a lot of crackles...has a couple of random pops, and no jumps. In fact it's such an amazingly LOUD cut that there is very very little to distract at all...it's such an awesome listen considering how it looks...
LABELS: (Side One: VG / Side Two: VG )...see pix for close-ups of the wear (odd bits of print have faded somewhat, especially close to the spindle hole, but it's still all legible)...plus there's been a name written on the Side One label in red felt pen, but so long ago that, at a cursory glance, the only obvious bits are where it's written over the gold print...also a white pencil line on Side One too...has a small tear on the edge of the spindle hole on Side Two...
If you have any concerns about the accuracy of my gradings, please check my feedback for the odd nice comment from some satisfied folk out there.... (and hopefully you may be able to join their ranks). Thanks for considering this item...Cheers, Jules.
