Playback (LP, 1968) Verve Forecast FTS-3042 Vinyl Is Excellent. Cover Has Some Various Issues, All Detailed Below.
The extremely rare, first stereo pressing of The Appletree Theatre, a project from John and Terence Boylan - not to mention of cast of dozens, including Larry Coryell, Bill Szymczyk, Denny Bruce, Chuck Rainey, Eric Gale and others. The vinyl is great, with only a LIGHT minor scratch, visible in a harsh reflective light, along with a few odd markings that a deep cleaning might help alleviate. This has been sitting on the shelf for over 50 years and got very little actual turntable time in all those decades. The cover has done the job of protecting the vinyl, but has paid the price. I've taken some pictures in harsh lighting so you can see some of it, but once you get it, the pics might look worse than the actual flaws. BUT... they are there. 3 of the 4 corners are nubbed, the bottom right being the worst as it's bent up a bit. There are some scratches/gouges on the back cover (see the close up pics). A handling crease on the back upper left (not visible on front). Some ringing on the top and sides (see pics). Partially disguised by the busy cover, but there, nonetheless. There's a cut out hole on the bottom right. No split seams or other real issues.

ALL MUSIC GUIDE REVIEW Playback is divided into three acts, an overture, and an epilogue, with the full-length songs linked by dialogue and snatches of music, sometimes given distorted sonic treatment. That's a style that became trendy during the Sgt. Pepper era, but really wasn't strictly necessary for a set such as this, which in the main consists of songs mixing folk-rock, pop/rock, light psychedelia, and orchestrated sunshine pop. The music is pleasant and fitfully unusual, with the Beach Boys-ish psych-lite of "Hightower Square" recalling the better moments of Sagittarius. There are also lilting, folky, pensive tunes like "Saturday Morning" and "I Wonder If Louise Is Home" that would probably find favor with fans of mildly adventurous 1960s pop/rockers like Emitt Rhodes. Obviously the interludes and bits of country-pop and soul-rock were intended as components of a quasi-psychedelic mosaic. But the group's forte, which is nice, dreamy, bittersweet psychedelic-tinged folk/rock/pop, is heard on the closing "What a Way to Go."

The follow-up solo album by Terence Boylan after The Appletree Theatre, is a unique, 4-man band configuration featuring Boylan (Guitar & Vocals), Walter Becker (Bass & Guitar), Don Fagen (Piano & Organ) and 3 different drummers, Herb Lovelle, Johnny Johnson & Darius Davenport. I scoured Steely Dan's Wiki page and couldn't even find a mention of this album, which might be their first officially released recordings of Becker & Fagen. Dan fans might know better or be able to confirm. Regardless, if you've ever wanted to hear Becker & Fagen performing Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues," here's your chance. 4 Stars From The All Music Guide.
The vinyl has some light scuffs and the occasional odd markings, but no noticeable scratches, while the cover has the prerequisite ring wear (mostly on front), a promo/cut out hole on the bottom left, and the original Verve catalog inner sleeve in great condition. There's a bit of a split seam on the spine, at the very bottom edge, about an inch. Not really split OPEN, but you can see it COULD be opened if pried. A couple of nubbed corners, but overall, in pretty good shape for being 52 years old.
