Description
Sod-Buster Ballads sung by The Almanacs Singers. The Almanacs were more of a collective of musicians than a solid band, whose "core" members for the majority of the group's run included Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Sis Cunningham, and Millard Lampell. Other players that came and went, or recorded with various Almanacs, included Josh White, Bess Hawes, Arthur Stern, Sam Gary, Carol White, Butch Hawes, Leadbelly, Alan Lomax, Burl Ives, and most likely many others. The Almanac Singers began in 1940, informally, with Millard Lampell and Lee Hays and Pete Seeger joining them in 1941. Their playing was initially for different political groups and labor unions. They were anti-establishment, pro-union, and supported by the Communist party. Each member of the Almanacs was politically active in Left Wing politics, and was a sounding board for the Communist party. The group's affiliation with the Communist party during this period became a liability when entertainers were brought to testify in the McCarthy hearings.
