Our Grading Policy (WE DO NOT USE GOLDMINE):

The Goldmine system - in addition to being expanded beyond the point of validity over the years by the eBay community - has provided what I believe to be a poor representation of the records receiving its grades. Would any of you describe a 'Fair' record as actually being fair? I know I wouldn't. Long story short, my partner and I have devised our own grading scale using only everyday words so that the average record-buyer may know just what the hell he or she is getting into. It is as follows:

  • Beautiful (compare to Mint/Near Mint): As close to perfection as it can be (we all know there exists no such thing as a "perfect record"). Both jacket and disc make for striking display pieces, and sound is Audiophile-Grade. It'll take a good magnifying glass and a powerful light to find defects in either. Fit for an archive, these are the exception, not the norm.
  • Very Nice (compare to EX/VG++): What a collector should expect of a decades-old album - a few minor defects are noticeable but the copy is still quite impressive. A jacket may have minor ringwear, while a disc will have some incredibly light scratches, usually in the form of scarcely-audible (if not entirely inaudible) paper scuffs. Sound is still fantastic and the jacket will look great on your wall.
  • Nice (compare to VG+): Not quite Very Nice, but to call it Good would be to under-value it. Still a highly respectable copy, but perhaps not archive-grade.
  • Good (compare to VG): Not by any means beat-up, but it shows its age. A jacket will show moderate wear, but typically no splits. The disc shouldn't skip but background noise will be more prominent. Distortion may exist, but won't overpower the sound. Good copies make for ideal playing copies - not nice enough to sweat over while handling yet nice enough to make for a pleasurable listening experience.
  • Mediocre (compare to VG-/G): Discs are typically littered with scratches, almost all of which are light but that cause significant background noise and noticeable distortion. Skips are a possibility, but never exceeding three per LP. The jacket will be in one piece but with moderately-large splits, and/or heavy edge or ringwear. These are cheap place-fillers or good starter-copies.
  • Lousy (compare to F/P): Deep scratches causing numerous skips, bad groove wear causing distortion, and/or a bevy of light scratches causing heavy background noise. The good news is that the disc is in one piece and not warped beyond trackability. The jacket will have any number of defects, ranging from large splits, torn slicks, heavy water damage, and/or excessive writing. We rarely waste our time listing these. Expect only mega-rare albums as dirt-cheap place-fillers.
