Talking Heads Robert Rauschenberg Speaking in Tongues Limited Edition Vinyl OG ’83 Unplayed Copy
In 1983, David Byrne commissioned esteemed avant-garde painter and design artist Robert Rauschenberg to create a limited edition special package for the Talking Heads’ new album, "Speaking in Tongues.”
The cutting edge design featured a transparent (amber colored) plastic case with artwork and credits printed on three 12" circular transparent collages, one per primary color (red, yellow, blue). The album was pressed on clear vinyl and sandwiched between 2 of the 3 collage discs. Warner Bros Records printed only 50,000 units.
This copy came directly from Warner Bros as a promo and hence has no sticker or adhesive gum where a sticker might have been. It’s only for photography prep for this sale that I opened the package. The LP is unplayed and relatively clean for 42 years old. I’ve placed it in a new 3 mil sleeve to protect it moving forward. The plastic outer case and 3 art discs are intact and in their original places. The cover and back cover collage discs are still factory-taped in place in the case as was the design. The 3rd disc is intact and sits between those two, with record. It was designed to add flair and maybe protect one side of the vinyl LP surface, but none of the discs were like a record sleeve. They were art.
This aged album package will be carefully packed for shipping, ensuring a safe arrival of this historic piece of record packaging and music.
