redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and very rare 10” LP from Philips (N 00664 R, Dutch pressing, green/silver “Minigroove” pressing, mono) features legendary pianist Magda Tagliaferro’s famous account of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5 in F Major "Egyptian" – recorded in Paris in April 1953 – with Jean Fournet conducting l'Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux.
There have been other fine performances of this work, by Sviatoslav Richter, Aldo Ciccolini, Jean-Philippe Collard, and more recently Stephen Hough, but this Brazilian Grand Dame of the piano imparts her own special brand of magic in this, Saint-Saëns’ most evocative and bewitching piano score. What’s more she receives finer accompaniment than all her rivals, Fournet eliciting a captivating exoticism from the Lamoureux players.
The sound is of vintage Philips quality – warm, spacious, yet finely detailed, piano and orchestra perfectly balanced. Tagliaferro’s concertante discography is not large, limited to memorable recordings with Hahn (Piano Concerto), Villa-Lobos (Momoprecoce), and Fauré (Ballade), making this Philips LP all the more treasurable. It is playing in the grand manner, large in gesture and spirit, Tagliaferro’s tone beautiful throughout every register of the piano.
There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Spanish only. The charming cover art is similarly uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a small hole-punch to the lower-left corner and a slight crease to the upper-right corner, but really that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
