Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light / light very fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This scarce stereo record looks very little played reitterated by nigh-on perfect sound throughout.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Formed in 1967 by singer-guitarist Marc Bolan, Tyrannosaurus Rex was originally envisioned as an electric sextet until a hire purchase company repossessed their equipment. Bolan was joined by percussionist Steve ‘Peregrine’ Took in an acoustic-based venture that combined his love of classic rock n roll with an affection for faerie mythology. Fans of this legend will know of his unusual quivering vocal style which often rendered his lyrics incomprehensible, but the effect was captivating and enchanting and the duo were adopted by John Peel, at the time an underground ‘progressive’ music specialist. Peel tirelessly promoted the group and they had three minor hit singles. This album is scarce, in high grading conditions especially so. The content of the album was somewhat intolerant of heavy tracking and thick vintage stylus. This copy looks and plays superbly, without doubt modestly played by the one and only original owner. The very wear prone cover has also faired well with far less wear than many seen and lastly, the original lyric insert is included and practically Mint as made. For fans of this legendary artist, this is a very impressive copy and from the same collection as the superb debut I am also currently offering.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably much better still. A single unlaminated format with deep texturing on the front, the back panel is smooth. The back has three external flipbacks making it extremely fragile and being so dark, prone to just about everything possible. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the ‘Patents Pending’ text. Includes the original inner sleever and lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: An immensely difficult cover and that is not putting too finer point on the fact. I have seldom seen this front looking better and my very conservative grading is only due to some quite light rubbing on the bottom edge. There is little to fault on the ruthlessly revealing front at all with barely a hint or any rubbing or speckle to the raised textured surface. Small rubs on the corner tips and the odd trace on the edges, but few will better this, the lack of creasing is also a massive plus. Still ultra dark, fresh and clean with NO ring wear at all, this front will take some beating.

Cover Back: The main panel is superb with practically nothing to fault. This smooth and still revealing, but no ring wear again and uncreased with minimal traces of any handling. Such dark matt surfaces are so uncompromising, but little to fault here. The three flipbacks are all solid and undamaged with minimal traces of any burring or rubbing to the textured surfaces. Any fading to these perilous parts very slight as is any speckle, a superb back to complement the very impressive front.

Top Edge: Any traces of rubbing are tiny, few and faint but the corner tips have rubbed.

Bottom Edges: I have never seen one of these without some rubbing to the storage edge and this has some to the left and right of centre. This being less than moderate and still quite fine with minimal encroachment on to the main front and back faces which is good news of course.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very small and faint, this is guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A rub on the top corner but not a great deal else. Given all the facts, this is an exceptional spine which to say the least, is ultra fragile. Solid, quite straight with minimal compression, the ends tapered in manufacture. The really important factor is the ALL the text is present and practically unworn. A tiny rub traces to the ‘s’ in ‘Angels’, nothing else. This VERY unusual indeed and most welcome. I have seen this spine totally threadbare before and rarely with all the text as solid and present. Any rubbing to the deep brown ink minimal, light and faint.

Corners: All the corner tips have rubbed, the top left moderate, the rest only quite small and light. I can hardly imagine one of these without being honest, these have NOT been tipped in.

Cover Summary: An extremely difficult cover for all the obvious reasons and finding one a great deal better will prove very difficult indeed. This geniune original stereo cover is very impressive and should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): a plain solid unlined white inner that has aged little. Very mild adhesive darkening on the seams but little else to fault. No creasing or edge splits that are totally repair-free, this original inner sleeve will rarely be seen better.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: MINT(-): and this probably even undergraded as such, this original double-sided inner is practically like new. Made with quite thick card and being yellow, this is revealing but nothing of any note to fault, it is little short of as made. Clean, fresh with ultra crisp edges, any creasing minuscule and barely any hint of a mark or blemish to be seen, they hardly get better than this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): or better. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. There are no penetrating scratches on this impressive disc. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
