Label/Format: Regal Zonophone – red format in scarce stereo, these have matt, quite smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both still clean and attractive, side two has some rubbing around the hole as seen. Spindle marks on that side are at least moderate, but only very light, fine and faint on side one. Although this record is marked and appears played a number of times, the sound quality is mainly superb with little to fault – yes, this one actually did surprise me.

Brief Info: The first Tyrannosaurus Rex album after Bolan had left John’s Children. All very acoustic and beautifully recorded in 8-track. The early ‘T Rex’ were very different to the Glam-rock era with a hippy-style psychedelic folk sound. Quite surprisingly, this album sold fairly well as it is hardly that commercial, it peaked at No 15 in the UK but was not even issued in the United States until 1972. The cover artwork is simply gorgeous. The sublime artwork by George Underwood, he also did the equally futuristic sci-fi back cover for Bowie’s original self-titled second album, later renamed, ‘Space Oddity’. As stated already, this copy has seen some usage and the vinyl has some visible marks and scuffs. But these are almost all superficial and non-sounding – a few gentle ticks on the John Peel poetry reading, but these are quite brief and light. Most-all of the music plays great with little else unwanted. An album I had on approval to try before I purchased, being honest, I would have not have bought without being able to do so. This way exceeded expectations and was a joy to play-grade, practically all the marks ignored. The has been enjoyed as well, clearly it was displayed in the past (and why not with beautiful artwork like this?), there are single small pin-holes in the corners with ah little wear on those areas, but front, this apart is still magnificent with lovely shiny laminate. The back aged a little more with some darkening and modest grubbiness. Great news, the card insert sheet is included, that took just one small pin-hole, but not much else to fault, this is so often missing altogether, and guaranteed original. So not for visual purists or those intolerant of usage or blemishes. But for those wanting an early copy to play and enjoy, this certainly delivers.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: or thereabouts, actually this looks better than that, the front especially. A purely subjective grading, difficult to grade a cover with some damage or usage issues, all explained below. A single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends on the back via three large external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the ‘Patents Pending’ text. Included is the original inner sleeve and the double-sided lyric insert sheet.

Lamination & Front: One of the greatest 1960s album cover fronts with stunning artwork by George Underwood. Here seen somewhere near maximum advantage under very shiny, clear and fresh laminate that has no lifting and hardly any dulling, even under light. But there are issues, mainly to the corners which have a little wear and a single pin-hole to each. A couple of mild half moon creases show little, then fine edge hairline creases few will avoid at best. Any laminate marks few and very light, the magificent graphic unfaded with age, even though it appears to have been displayed in the distant past.

Cover Back: Again the pin-holes are seen on the corners. The top left edge had a neat tear which I decided to repair to reduce risk of it catching and widening, this has worked well (I feel). The flipbacks are then generally neat with no other major issues of note. Clearly the main back card has darkened with age and a little grubby near the left entrance area, that apart, little else to fault with barely any rubbing or creasing.

Top Edge: Thin, but still quite straight with mostly intact smooth laminate that has hardly any wear up to the right corner tip area.

Bottom Edge: Superb up to the very end tips that have small rubs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and little as seen viewed critically end-on. Record enters on this edge, this guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Little to fault on this spine which remains very solid, straight with any compression light, the ends are tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and hardly cracked laminate.

Corners: Moderate tip wear as mentioned already along with the small holes. Fair to fine shape retained, no bashes, but this has been displayed (I presume).

Cover Summary: With some issues, albeit, reasonably light overall, this is not for the more discerning cover purist or collector, but this still looks very nice as seen. A scarce early example to please some collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain solid unlined white inner that has aged again with tone spotting in places. Little creasing, only rim impression with no edge splits or repairs. This includes the ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT: and this probably even under-graded as such, this original double-sided inner has little to fault bar a single tiny pin-hole on one bottom corner. Made with quite thick card and side one features a small inset of John Peel as seen in close-up. He was a great fan of the early ‘T. Rex’ and promoted their work extensively, he also features on the album itself reading a poetry piece towards the end. Generally clean with minimal creasing with mostly crisp edges. Any hint of toning or ageing light and faint, this scarce insert is so often missing and this is a fine example that is guaranteed original.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading & Sound: VERY GOOD(–): a visual grading I will rarely offer. But as stated above, this was played prior to purchase purely on approval, and it offers very impressive, clean sound with little to fault bar a few gentle clicks on the John Peel reading, the songs are all lovely and clean. A respectable visual copy with fine shine and solidly pressed with no tracking issues*. This has numerous marks and some scuffs, most-all surface types and superficial. Some more seen than others, under light fine wispy ones are apparent as well, totally harmless of course. A copy played a number of times, of that, there is no doubt, but sound quality is the most important factor for me bar none. And when rarer albums play this good, I have no qualms in offering them. When a record is on a turntable and playing without distortion, hardly any crackle/contact noise and general degrading, I worry less about visual blemishes or issues. Simply enjoy the music. I feel it would not be unfair to state, this record, for most of its entirety, plays nearly two grades above its visual. Bolan’s vocals are crisp and clear, the sparse backing the same, as stated, this surprised me, it goes to show not all marked records will disappoint for high quality audio. But for those intolerant of marks and clear signs of usage, this is not for you. But high grading copies of this are in demand and usually command considerable premium prices. So this is a great opportunity for those happy to compromise on marks, but want a clean sounding very early pressed record, on that basis alone, I am happy to recommend it.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
