Few English saxophonists could out-swing Tubby Hayes. In Images-1 fact, many American jazz reed players of the '50s and '60s struggled to keep up. Listening to Hayes' recordings today without knowing who was playing would likely leave you guessing for hours. One of his most exciting albums (and there are many) is Tubby the Tenor, which was recorded on October 4th and 5th in 1961 in New York for Epic, Columbia's jazz and pop subsidiary.

Hayes was accompanied on the dates by a hard-charging trio—the 263 eloquent blues pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Dave Bailey. And if those guys weren't enough, Hayes was joined on several tracks by trumpeter and flugelhornist Clark Terry and on others by vibist Eddie Costa.

What's remarkable here is how at ease Hayes sounded and how fast and furious the ideas came  to him. According to the album's 1961 liner notes by Stanley Dance, Hayes after the session took his horn to the Half Note to blow with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. Dance quotes Cohn as saying: "He came down and made us feel sluggish."

Hayes knew this session was a big deal. Put differently, Hayes Images was well aware that he was being teamed with some seriously tough talent, and anything short of a mind-blowing effort on his first New York record date would be viewed as a flop.

So days before the two sessions, Hayes headed to Columbia's studios and shut himself in a room for four hours at a time with just a piano, running through all of the songs' chord changes again and again. When it was time to record, Hayes was so familiar with the material that he was creatively free to whip out one idea after the next without worrying about song recall.

The first session began at midnight on October 4. Three hours later, a five flawless tracks were captured—enough to complete an album. Hayes and the trio recorded again the next night, and the same thing happened—track after track of perfect music. The musicians weren't alone in the studio. Word had spread about Tubby, prompting musicians like alto saxophonist Gene Quill and arranger-pianist Bill Potts to stop by.

According to the liner notes, arranger Manny Albam occupied a front-row audience seat during both sessions. Interestingly, Costa's appearance occurred because he happened to be playing at Birdland at the time, which was located a few blocks away. He  dropped by during his intermission to record.

Costa and Terry [pictured] are superb additions to this date, but the Terry real maverick surprise is Parlan. The pianist was at his peak here, and I can't recall hearing him play more robustly on other any other session, from both an accompanist perspective and as a soloist.

Among the standout tracks are swinger You for Me, the hardbop Half a Sawbuck and Soho Soul, which has a John Coltrane feel. Dig Eddie Costa's solo on Sonny Rollins' Airegin and Parlan's red-hot solos on Soon and Opus Ocean. Terry, of course, is superb on all of his tracks.

Hayes not only played tenor sax but he also could play the flute and vibes superbly. Sadly, Hayes died in June 1973 during heart surgery in London. He was just 38 years old.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker, delicately masked (camouflaged) with a like-colored (black) marker (less than ¼ square inch in size)

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity  (nothing significant).

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape)

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner)

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent. (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes
