Description
The two tracks on this single were both recorded in 1959 and released on the King record label that year in the US. The singles were 'Rock On / Since I Don't Have You" King 45 5187 and "Yes You Do / My Runaway Heart King 45 5174. Trini Lopez had recorded ten singles for King Records between 1959 and late 1960 after which he left King Records. He released a couple of singles on the Hollywood based DRA label in 1962, but his big break came in 1963 when he signed with the Reprise label and released the highly successful live album "Trini Lopez at P. J.'s". Several singles were released on the Repriese label from this album including "If I Had a Hammer" and "La Bamba" , these singles included the crowd noises and applause from the live performances. King Records, hoping to take advantage of Trini Lopez' growing popularity at this time reissued some of the earlier material that they still held the rights to. This Australian W & G 1964 release, of "Rock On" and "Yes You Do"has crowd noises overdubbed at the beginning and the end of both tracks in an effort to sound like the live Reprise tracks that were riding high in the charts at that time. Fortunately this does not affect the sound of the songs as they were studio recordings, and the crowd noise fades out after a couple of spins. Both these songs are terrific, full on rock'n'roll totally different to the material that Trini Lopez was recording in 1964, which consisted of pop versions of folk songs and some Latin material. However they did not sell as well as the Reprise releases, and as a consequence this single is extremely difficult to find. This is the only copy that I have seen in all my years of record collecting. The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny, and both sides play LOUD and clear. I rarely grade older singles as EX, VG+ being the highest grading that I generally use, however this single is an exception. To help keep it in this condition I have put it into a plastic EP inner sleeve inside the paper cover. The cover is a plain white cover and it is clean, no writing or stickers,no tears or splits just some light creases around the shape of the record(VG)
