"THE GARDEN OF JANE DELAWNEY" CBS Records. Released April 1970. 
This is the genuine CBS original LP owned from new. I acquired this copy in January 71 after discovering & purchasing the excellent "ON THE SHORE"  their 2nd LP.  
The record is graded between Excellent (EX) & Very Good (VG) which is remarkable considering its age of 51 years. Both sides of the record have no scratches, but some imperceptible hairline marks and play perfectly, with some minor surface noise between tracks.  There is no hole distortion.  The sleeve is graded Good (G)  It has some ageing and creases around its edges and corners as shown and some minor ring wear on the rear face. The inner sleeve is the original, depicting a selection of CBS 70s vintage releases.  I have viewed it on various sites from £250 to £500. It is valued by RCM at £350 (M).  Original CBS copies are now vary rare. 
Trees at the time of this recording were:- Celia Humpris (Vocals), Bias Boshell (Bass & Keyboards), Barry Clarke (Lead Guitar),  David Costa (Electric & Accoustic Guitar), Unwin Brown (Drums). 
Formed in early spring of 1969.  Trees started gigging & producing early demo recordings throughout June & July.  Signing with CBS in August of that year. They produced two albums in quick succession. This Gem,  "The Garden of Jane Delawney" &  followed with, their even more impressive "On the Shore" (Recorded October 1970 & released January 1971) Both albums were recorded at Sound Techniques, Chelsea, London. On this LP the producers were :-  Tony Cox & David Howells. The engineers were Victor Gamm & Mike FitzHenry. 
David Costa designed & painted the front cover, while the reverse imge was captured by Elly Beintema who had produced various images of the band. 
The songs on the album are an amazing amalgam of folk, rock & west coast phychedelic influences, highlighted in both traditional & original songs (especially Bias Boshell's songwriting abilities) played by the musicians, that were crowned by Celia's haunting vocals. When the band took of on their instrumentals they went flying. The interplay between Barry & David on such songs as Lady Margaret & The Great Silkie is impressive & echos the abilities of John Cipollina & Gary Duncan of Quicksilver. Trees had an ability to create musical tensions within songs, building them slowly to a crescendo, then releasing back down to land. 
Comparisons were made with Fairport (whom the group admired) but Trees music was more radial & west coast influenced. It flowed slow & fast around the virtuosity and highly underrared capabilities of Barry Clark & David Costa, whose skills were more than equal, to more luminary players of the day. 
I saw them play live only once. That was Trees Mk 2 , comprising of Celia, Barry, and former Mr Fox menbers Allen Eden (Drums) & Barry Lyons (Bass) & former JSD Band member Chuck Flemming (Fiddle).  Their performance was more intense moving into heavier forms of folk rock.
The recordings on the bootleg album  "Trees Live"  reflect this, as well as further changes, including the amazing electric violin playing of Joe O'Donnall. 
It is a reflection of the stature and music of "The Garden of Jane Delawney" that has continued to grow. It has has never been deleted throughout its 51 year existance. Like a good book it is always special to have the First Edition. 
Some observations upon Grading:-  Mint (M) The record is in brand new condition, no surface marks, no sound quality detreration. Records designated as sealed or un-played qualify as mint.  Excellent (EX) The record shows some signs of being played, but with minimal lessening of sound quality. The cover &/or packaging may show slight wear and/or creasing.  Very Good (VG) The record has obviously been played many times, but mainfests no sound quality deteration. Despite noticable surface marks &/or light scratching. Visible normal  wear & tear on the cover and/or additional items, without major defects is acceptable.  Good (G) the record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably  deteriorated, pehaps with som mild distortion & mild scratches. The cover and contents may suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.  Fair (F) The record is still just playable, but has not been cared for properly, and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.  The cover and/or contents will be torn, stained  and/or defaced
