Brief Info: The third Traffic album issued after the initial band split, however they quickly reformed and carried on making new albums for Island. An album of two sides: the first being studio songs, some of which were previously issued on mono, but here in stereo. Side two was recorded live at The Fillmore West and includes impressive improvisation on two longer songs. One of the least seen Traffic albums and this a fine pink rim copy which is still early.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gateford format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day, includes a blue Island Basing Street inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A notoriously wear-prone cover and rarely avoiding heavy and penetrating ring wear and rubbing. This is a fine example, and a first print by EJD with most rubbing on the edge folds making the main surfaces clean and attractive to view. So a little rubbing seen on the folds here-and-there with any creasing little and light, this on the spine edge only. The graphic strong with no fading or sticker issues and actually one of the very fronts I have seen on this unforgiving surface.

Cover Back: The back is very similar with just the odd faint light surface crease away from the edges. The lack of ugly ring wear is a major plus on this one.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with little to fault at all.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with light to moderate fairly patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Quite similar with a little more moderate rubbing on the front. Storage edges on this cover seldom escape some wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Most of any any thickening is on the back entrance edge, but even this is only patchy and reasonably light. The front and inner back edges are still quite sharp. The front edge is closed and factory machine cut. The record enters on the back edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. More unusually, the text is practically unworn and easily read. The surface has only a few small chips on the top fold as seen, and a little rubbing on the very ends. Still one of the best spines I have seen on this cover.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing, some a little less with reasonably fine shape mostly retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover, few EJD first prints survive without some wear, but with the main areas impressive, this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: but with a name on one top corner that looks like pencil. That apart, a very fine looking Island inner that has the early ‘basing street london w11’ text. Still a fine shade of blue and not faded like many, the polylining still intact as are the edges. No hard creases, just some natural crinkle.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): side two arguably better still. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks or blemishes few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This more elusive Traffic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early pink rim pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been reasonably well stored and the record carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this fine looking record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
