In 1972 Townes Van Zandt cut two perfect albums, one of them being this one. Tomato Records' owner Producer Kevin Eggers keeps the spotlight on Van Zandt's vocals and his songwriting. The record includes To Live Is To Fly, the song Van Zandt considered his best, No Deal, an absurd hard luck blues, a couple of gospel songs, two talking blues, Mr. Gold and Mr. Mud, one of his most baffling poetic tunes, and the title track, an aching tale of heartache and confusion.
The spare arrangements are as much folk as country, the two genres Van Zandt was most comfortable with. Even with the sparse production, the songs include bright female backing vocals, tinkling gospel piano, weeping pedal steel, and standup bass. Van Zandt crams an amazing amount of brilliant imagery into these songs, delivering a performance that's both impressive and impenetrable. Musically low key, but emotionally potent, this recording shows Van Zandt digging deep into his troubled psyche and turning his heartache into soul-stirring art.

Notes: Original plain brown paper. No rips, no tape, no writing, no holes, no stains, some crinkles. Two-inch split at center of left edge.

Notes: Light ring wear, no splits, no tape, no stains, no writing. Edges, spine (partially readable), corners are slightly worn. There’s a scrape along the left edge of the front cover. (See my original scan.) Promo sticker at top right corner of back cover. (Nothing obscured.)
