Who's Next has long been a prominent part of The Who's musical canon and highlighted by "Won't Get Fooled Again", in all probability the most recognized Who song ever. But more over, lesser known runes such as "The Song Is Over" and "Behind Blue Eyes" are equally important with soft, melancholic moments of the Who are interesting in contrast to how drastically different the rest of their music tends to be.
"Baba O'Riley" featuring this amazingly complex (for 1971) synthesizer section, and these big, majestic power chords. More than anything else, the Who have this remarkable ability to never truly conform to a single style. Not even within a single album is there a single dominant musicianship present. The songs never feel distanced from one another no, but they're never all that similar sounding outside of Keith Moon's manic drumming and Daltry's wail.
"Bargain" has this weird string section that backs it, and Pete Townshend decides to jam for a good portion of the track, where in the last song he was, more or less, striking big power chords. "Love Ain't for Keeping" has a completely different sound, with an almost Stonesian, rural rock approach. "My Wife" is a great infectious number that stands up well over nearly 40 years.
"The Song Is Over" actually features Pete Townshend over Roger Daltry on vocals, and is once keys-led. The difference is how distinctly the song can be identified as a ballad. Then it breaks into this lurching groove that is never quite like the Who's hard rock moments, nor their newfound soft rock moments. This versatility within rock music, without ever losing control (like the Beatles and the Stones did) is what always fans of the group enjoy the Who more. Another favorite moment of this track is in the final moments, where Townshend back-references "Pure and Easy", a theme that would grow to be the most prominent gimmick of Quadrophenia.
"Getting in Tune" completely fakes out the whole keys rock idea that the last couple of songs may have led you to believe. The keys strike the big chords, while the guitar jams in the backdrop. "Goin' Mobile" once more strikes that rural rock vibe, but "Behind Blue Eyes" is what makes this album worth any appraisal at all. It's completely personal and heart-wrenching. Then there's the massive "Won't Get Fooled Again" that truly needs absolutely no introduction. Simply one of the most legendary songs and it is still a big banger.
The greatest thing about the Who isn't really in their finest masterpieces, like Who's Next or Quadrophenia, but rather within the rest of their discography. You can never truly predict what the Who have cooked up in any of their releases, and every single album truly is worth having for this very fact. CONDITION: The cover: in original factory shrink wrap and MINT ...the outer wrapper is fitting tight and the cover underneath top clean (the back cover (dark color) is almost always found with shelf wear, this copy TOPS MINT.
The vinyl: both sides are all glossy clean and smooth M- first glance tell you "clean" ... obviously plays outstanding....
