This brief album of ska stompers was recorded in 1965 for producer Byron Lee shortly before Maytals lead singer Toots Hibbert was arrested and tossed in prison for ganja possession. The ska-era Maytals were even more rough-hewed than the later roots reggae version, if that's possible, and there is a delightful feel of gospel-fueled chaos to these tracks, most of which are punctuated by blasts of saxophone and trumpet. While cuts like "Never You Change," "Daddy," and "Fever" hint at the magic this group would produce a couple years down the road, truthfully this set is for Maytals fanatics only. Yes, Toots is a ball of fervent energy here, and the rest of the Maytals match him burst for burst, but Toots' songwriting hadn't quite matured, and the group was still learning how to bring all that energy into focus, giving these tracks all the stage dynamics of an explosion -- but then where do you go for the second verse?

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the top seam.

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has a tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-        A minor, faint water stain affects the area about 2 square inches in two corners  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Cover has a small country of origin stamp on the back panel

-         Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
