Description
HERE IS a flat-out wonderful record by KING OLIVER AND HIS ORCHESTRA in 1929: "TOO LATE" and "WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO," both original compositions by Joe Oliver. He had severe gum trouble by the late '20s, and often assigned the "hot" trumpet playing to younger guys like "Bubber" Miley, Ward Pinkett and Kid "Punch" Miller.
BUT on these two sides, the King is firmly in charge throughout, especially on the explosive "Too Late," where he blows some of the most exciting and satisfying horn of his entire recorded career! "What You Want" is a beautiful slow ballad, thrillingly dominated in the last two choruses by BOBBY HOLMES on clarinet. These are both terrific, effective arrangements, too. Don't miss this one!
This original 1937 "Staff" Bluebird B-7242 is a master-pressed reissue of both sides of the 1929 Victor. EE- condition. Don't be put off by the curiously indelible white marks in the playing surfaces; they don't sound.
*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
