TONY COE TONY’S BASEMENT Rare UK Jazz COLUMBIA SX6170 MONO 1967 TONY COE’ Tony’s Basement with the Lansdowne String Quartet - Moody Jazzy perfection from one of the great reed players - Here he plays mostly Tenor Sax but also clarinet on (Murmurio) Alto sax on Whisper it slowly and even flute on Never love a stranger - Perhaps best known for his work on the PINK PANTHER soundtracks Tony Coe’s was given the chance to join the Count Basie Orchestra in 1966 and although in the end it did’nt happen EMI -Did’nt want to loose the opportunity to showcase Tony Coes not inconsiderable talent - This album is the result - And what a treat it is ! with a largely “late night” repertoire- Some of this is just haunting and beautiful - with some steller players including Bill le sage on vibes and piano - The Lansdowne string quartet provide a lush and evocative soundscape.
