Tommie Jenkins w/ Naomi Mack, piano – Freedom Choo Choo Blues / Naomi Mack – Tight Key Boogie OLLIET OTH-1 M- This 1948 Oakland release by black recording entrepreneur and song writer Oliver T. Hunt features Bay Area Gospel singer Jenkins performing Hunt’s composition “Freedom Choo Choo”, with its ironic references to the government-sponsored Freedom Train, then making a tour of the country, and the gaps that still existed in African American freedoms. Guido Van Rijn discusses the song in detail in his book and CD on the Truman years. The flip is an outstanding stride boogie by pianist Mack, who also backed gospel singers in her other recorded work. This Mint Minus copy was found in the unsold stock of the Bronz Record Shop, which operated in Sacramento in 1947-8 and was apparently visited by Hunt, who had very limited distribution, reportedly carrying records himself to whatever black-owned outlets he could locate. Historically significant, and one of the rarest Bay Area blues records.
