TOM WAITS
Rain Dog

ORIGINAL UK ISLAND (ILPS 9803) FIRST PRESSING (August 1985) OF TOM WAITS' "Rain Dogs" LP IN ONCE PLAYED CONDITION DELIVERING CLEAN, CRYSTAL CLEAR AND BEAUTIFULLY WARM SOUND THROUGHOUT - GREAT COPY - VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

PRESSED ON QUALITY MID-WEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST ISSUE ISLAND LABELS
MATRIX: ILPS 9803 A-1U - 1 - 1 - (etched 'GRAEME') / ILPS 9803 B-2U - 1 - 1 -
THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL SINGLE SLEEVE WITH A LIGHT GLOSS FINISH
AND COMES COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL (US) PRINTED LYRIC INNER SLEEVE

With its jarring rhythms and unusual instrumentation -- marimba, accordion, various percussion -- as well as its frequently surreal lyrics, Rain Dogs is very much a follow-up to Swordfishtrombones, which is to say that it sounds for the most part like The Threepenny Opera being sung by Howlin' Wolf.
The chief musical difference is the introduction of guitarist Marc Ribot, who adds his noisy leads to the general cacophony.
But Rain Dogs is sprawling where its predecessor had been focused: Tom Waits' lyrics here sometimes are imaginative to the point of obscurity, seemingly chosen to fit the rhythms rather than for sense.
In the course of 19 tracks and 54 minutes, Waits sometimes goes back to the more conventional music of his earlier records, which seems like a retreat, though such tracks as the catchy "Hang Down Your Head," "Time," and especially "Downtown Train" provide some relief as well as variety.
Rain Dogs can't quite surprise as Swordfishtrombones had, and in his attempt to continue in the direction suggested by that album, Waits occasionally borders on the chaotic (which may only be to say that, like most of his records, this one is uneven).
But much of the music matches the earlier album, and there is so much of it that that is enough to qualify Rain Dogs as one of Waits' better albums.

Side 1: Singapore / Clap Hands / Cemetery Polka / Jockey Full Of Bourbon / Tango Till They're Sore / Big Black Mariah / Diamonds And Gold / Hang Down Your Head / Time
Side 2: Rain Dogs / Midtown / 9th And Hennepin / Gun Street Girl / Union Square / Blind Love / Walking Spanish / Downtown Train / Bride Of Rain Dogs (instrumental) / Anywhere I Lay My Head

LABELS: Clean, bright and unmarked labels with just one spindle trace on each side - this copy has clearly seen little play - the Side One label has a pressing fold from manufacture (please see close-up photo) - MINT(-)
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces retain their original deep, like new glossy sheen and are completely unmarked - MINT
VINYL Audio: Clean, sharp and warm sound throughout with nothing to fault - no scratches, no jumps/sticks, no clicks/pops and no surface noise - beautifully clean. A fantastic copy of this wonderful LP - very much a follow-up to Swordfishtrombones but with a more Brechtian cabaret feel, the record plays to a very high standard with great clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion (it's barely been played) and is critically graded MINT for audio
SLEEVE: The sleeve is clean and unmarked with no real wear to speak of - a fine example, very fresh - NEAR MINT
INNER SLEEVE: The original lyric inner (printed in the USA) has some age-related 'foxing' spots (nothing major, they're very light) and a light crease to the bottom corner but is otherwise, clean and unmarked with no splits to the edges - EXCELLENT+
