RARE!!! THE 45s THAT "MASTER" TITO RODRIGUEZ RECORDED FOR RCA-VICTOR DURING HIS 1ST STINT (1953-1955...A HARD TIME FOR HIM WHEN RCA WAS "PUSHING" THE PEREZ PRADO AND ELVIS RECORDINGS!) IN THE LABELTHERE ARE THE MOST HARD TO FIND ONES!....THIS IS ONE OF THEM!! PURPLE LABEL!!!!

En 1939, Tito Rodríguez, con 16 años de edad, llegó a Nueva York esperanzado en trabajar como cantante y trazar su propia ruta musical. En un principio hizo apariciones en la orquesta de su hermano Johnny y poco después logró cantar con el Cuarteto Marcano, con el cual grabó sus primeros discos en Nueva York, aunque nunca formó parte de esta agrupación. Luego, integró la agrupación musical cubana Cuarteto Caney y tras una pasantía breve por las orquestas de Enric Madriguera y Xavier Cugat como cantante y percusionista, presta en 1945 el servicio militar obligatorio en el ejército estadounidense.

Al licenciarse del ejército, el pianista y compositor cubano José Curbelo reclutó a Rodríguez como cantante y músico para su orquesta. Ese año, mientras la banda de Curbelo actuaba en el club nocturno China Doll, Rodríguez conoció a una corista estadounidense-japonesa llamada apodada Tobi Kei, cuyo nombre verdadero era Takeku Kunimatsu, con quien se casó unos meses después y tendría a sus hijos Tito Jr. y Cindy. Este matrimonio duró hasta el fallecimiento del artista.

Como anécdota de esta época, se cuenta que un día de 1947, Rodríguez pidió permiso a José Curbelo para atender a su esposa enferma, pero realmente el cantante estaba tomando licor en un bar. Al saberlo, Curbelo lo despidió y Tito estuvo desempleado largo tiempo. Después dirigió un quinteto de corta duración y en 1948 funda la orquesta Mambo Devils (Diablos del Mambo). Con esta orquesta, en pleno auge del mambo, Rodríguez rivaliza con las orquestas de Tito Puente y con los Afrocubans de Machito.

Temprano en su carrera Tito Rodríguez fue influenciado, como tantos otros cantantes, por el vocalista cubano Miguelito Valdés. Con el tiempo desarrolló su propio estilo.

Firma su primer contrato de grabación con la disquera Tico Records, la cual le obliga a cambiar el nombre de su orquesta, el cual pasó a ser Los Lobos del Mambo. Para entonces había iniciado estudios en Julliard Musical Conservatory tomando clases de percusión, vibráfono y xilófono.

Buscando nuevos mercados para su música, Rodríguez firma en 1953 un nuevo contrato con la empresa transnacional RCA Víctor y su banda pasa a llamarse Tito Rodríguez y su Orquesta. Años después de su muerte, Sony Music Entertainment reeditó en formato CD las cintas de estas grabaciones.

En 1955, Tito Rodríguez se percata de que el atrilero de su banda en ese tiempo, su compatriota "Cheo" Feliciano, tenía talento para ser cantante y percusionista. Gracias a ello, Rodríguez le ofrece la oportunidad de cantar junto a su orquesta en el club nocturno neoyorquino, hoy desaparecido, Palladium. Feliciano sale airoso de la prueba y Rodríguez le recomienda al músico Joe Cuba su inclusión en su sexteto, con lo que inicia su carrera en forma independiente.

En 1957, renuncia a su contrato con RCA Víctor y firma nuevamente contrato con Tico Records, para producir solamente tres álbumes en LP. En 1960 hace un nuevo contrato con la división discográfica de la empresa cinematográfica United Artists, en el cual puso como condición que él sería el único líder de banda musical latino que grabaría para la compañía. Su primer álbum con este sello, titulado Live at the Palladium, constituyó un éxito que fue empañado sólo por la continua rivalidad con el músico estadounidense Tito Puente, la cual nació mientras trabajaban con la orquesta de José Curbelo. En junio de 1962, Rodríguez y su banda grabaron Back Home in Puerto Rico durante una estadía de dos semanas en la isla. Su regreso fue marcado por recepciones oficiales de gobierno y amplia cobertura por los medios noticiosos.

STILL SEALED (SS)

Mint (M) Perfect in every way. Never been played, possibly even still sealed. We usually won't grade this unless we really mean it.

Near Mint (NM or M-) A nearly perfect record. The record should show no obvious signs of wear.

Very Good Plus (VG+) This will show some signs that it was played and handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. The vinyl surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't greatly affect one's listening experiences. Very light warps that do not affect the sound or tracking may be present. The label may have some light ring wear or discoloration.

VG++ (Excellent) RECORD WILL BE JUST IN-BETWEEN VG+ & NM (CLOSER TO NM).....Almost No Wear, No Significant Noise, No Clicks!

Very Good (VG) Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced for this grade. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in quiet passages or during a song's intro and fade, they will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that may affect the sound. The label may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. TO BE SOLD AS IS!

Good (G), Good Plus (G+) Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and should play through without skipping. It will have significant surface noise, scratches and visible groove wear. Labels will have heavy wear. (If its is a vinyl you have been seeking for years, and the price is right, get it...but look to upgrade down the road) TO BE SOLD AS IS!

STILL SEALED (SS) Even though a record is sealed the jacket may still have wear. This can result in a grade such as (SS VG+) (This means it is sealed but maybe it has some light ring wear from sitting for years or a very small cut in it somewhere.)

Mint (M) Perfect in every way.

Near Mint (NM or M-) A nearly perfect jacket. It should show no obvious signs of wear. The cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. Definitely no cut-out holes.

VG++ (Excellent) Almost No Wear, No Splits, No Significant Edge Wear

Very Good Plus (VG+) Jacket will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. Possible a well-repaired seam split that is no longer highly noticeable. The jacket may have slight signs of ring wear, or may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount. A VG++ will have no splits, minimal ring wear if any, etc.

Very Good (VG) The jacket can have any of the defects listed in VG+. It may have a little larger seam splits then the VG+ jacket could have. The jacket may also be marred by writing, or have tape, stickers, or their residue attached. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them. It may have larger seam splits that are carefully repaired and nearly un-noticeable. TO BE SOLD AS IS!

Good (G), Good Plus (G+) The jacket will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the look of jacket. TO BE SOLD AS IS!
