Label Conditions: Stunning examples that are virtually reference standard. Immaculately clean and eye-pleasing and clearly little handled. Barely a spindle trace to be seen with just the odd friction trace around the hole on side one, they hardly get much better.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Formed in the early 1970s in Ireland by Leo O’Kelly and Sonny Condell, this is a very highly regarded album and deservedly so. Twelve of the thirteen songs are self-written and this duo made beautiful music together. Condell plays guitar, moroccan pottery drums, tablas, jews harp and sings. O’Kelly plays guitar, dulcimer, electric bass, tin whistle and sings too. This excellent debut recording is also regarded as one of the most influential albums to ever come out of Ireland and they recorded sessions for John Peel and Bob Harris. All elements of this very early copy are in very fine condition and sound quality is high.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with laminated front and back surfaces. The inside is matt and smooth finished. Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group and includes the blue Island inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front and Back: The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with barely any dulling, friction rubs or even rim impression. Just one very small lift on the back top left corner, barely any creasing, any marks tiny, few and faint. The entrance edges have a wider than usual unlaminated strip: the front is very white and immaculate, the back has faint toning traces towards the bottom half, they have minimal visual impact or distraction. Both these outer faces will prove hard to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: An impressive centrefold with just faint traces of darkening near the top edges. The laminate is tucked inside, so there is no residue or sticking from the ends and this has very little to fault at all.

Top Edges: Faint friction traces only, both thick and solid.

Bottom Edges: Very light toning traces only, that apart, little else to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear at all. No burring or thickening, both guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on back edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine that has little of the usual creasing or crushing. Solid, very thick, straight, with minimal traces of any compression. Folded square, so the edges meet up flush and parallel, all text is perfect and unworn under the very solid and uncracked laminate. These often peel badly and this is nigh-on fully intact and super-smooth to the touch.

Corners: Again, barely any wear and all retain excellent to near mint shape with no dinks or noteworthy creasing.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this robust early 1970’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find better. This visually impressive early-made cover should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an early Island polylined blue inner sleeve in superb condition. It retains deep colour with minimal traces of any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. It has the first basing street text. A little gentle seam adhesive darkening that few ever avoid.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Whispy traces only, finer than hairlines with no penetrating scratches at all. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive Island-credit record plays for most, even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with just a tiny few sporadic one-off ticks and little else. Quite a long album with some delicate material, the odd light reminder it is a vintage original vinyl record being played is hard to avoid totally. But few available copies will outperform this quality pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first copy for several years in fact. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
