Brief Info: The third Tim Buckley album. Starting as a folk-orientated singer-songwriter, ‘Happy Sad’ progressed his sound with more jazzy influences, longer songs and less mainstream – even though it proved to be his biggest seller in his native United States – UK copies are scarce. Subsequent albums became far less commercial when he signed to Frank Zappa’s newly formed Straight label and sales predictably fell. Buckley’s music, arguably is an acquired taste. His vocal style and expression is totally unique and challenging – sometimes full-on and intense – but its beauty is beyond dispute. This is a magnificent album, but like so many other great artists who were somewhat different, patience and several plays are essential. As stated, UK originals are not easily found, this a lovely heavy-pressed copy appearing modestly played and offering very fine sound. Some quiet passages, so the odd gentle reminder of what is being played, but it will not prove easy to find better. The cover front has a tape residue mark and a moderate, but reasonably small surface tear, so not perfect by any means, but still an attractive one as seen.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day on very thin card, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: As stated above, the top left has a tape residue mark and a surface tear as seen. Also some narrow rubbing of the spine edge. That apart, it looks very nice with any running little and light, the thin card has largely avoided creasing (a small one on the top right corner) and ugly ring wear. The really important factor is Buckley’s face area, which clearly dominates this front has avoided any issues of note at all.

Cover Back: A small rub on Buckley’s right shoulder, this on a white area, thus showing little. Any creasing very fine and the unforgiving surface avoiding rubbing and ring wear again. This is actually impressive with lovely artwork.

Top Edge: Very thin, largely straight with patchy light rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Similar, the rubbing nearer moderate, but on a pale surface showing less.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring mostly light again as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with some compression and patchy rubbing, this mostly on the top fold seen on front. Most text is present, but a few letters are rubbed or eroded as seen.

Corners: Corner wear is actually fairly light, but some tip rubbing is evident. Fine to very fine shape retained without bashes or major dinks.

Cover Summary: An attractive cover, but with the tear and some edge wear, not for purist collectors. Ernest J. Day UK originals are scarce, so it will not prove easy to find ‘perfect’, or possibly even a great deal better as most will have issues. It will please many fans and collectors I feel sure.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined basic inner sleeve with little to fault. This has hardly aged at all with minimal hint of discolouration, two pristine window circles and no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with modest usage on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very fine, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Viewed in average room light, hardly any of them even register, these most likely dry cloth ‘cleaning’ and harmless, there are no penetrating stylus scratches. Visually a lovely, elusive record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, however, some quieter songs and passages, so the odd gentle tick or blemish is so hard to avoid totally on a 47-year-old record, that is simply being realistic, especially being played on revealing and clinical equipment. A very fine and clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available UK copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
