Brief Info: Tim Buckley’s first album on Frank Zappa’s Straight label, Buckley now had poetic licence to freely express himself without constraints of being commercial. It started his drift from more mellow folk music to a more expansive and expressive sound with elements of jazz, but ‘Blue Afternoon’ is far more accessible than the two albums that followed. It is my personal second-favourite album after the groundbreaking ‘Starsailor’ (also on offer), and includes some fantastic songs. None better than the final two on side one, both are Buckley classics. This an impressive American copy and to date, one of the cleanest pressings I have heard. This is not always the case for this album.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with a gentle sheen and texturing traces. Printed in the United States, includes the Frank Zappa/Herb Cohen inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Very impressive for a typically wear-prone American cover, any rubbing little, very light and faint, there is hardly any creasing. Any blemishes also tiny, mostly near the bottom edge.

Cover Back: Some rim rubbing which is rarely avoided on this dark back, this mainly near the top and bottom edges. Any other rubbing little and light, again the lack of creasing a significant plus.

Inside Gatefold: Little to fault inside, this has the usual paste-on style construction.

Top Edge: Straight, solid with no splits, and barely rubbed at all.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, a couple of dink traces seen end-on.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real edge which is neat and unworn. The back entrance quite sharp with minimal hint of thickening, all is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Near perfect: solid, thick and straight with no compression. Folded squarely, so the edges meet up flush and parallel. All text present and unworn, but centred low in manufacture. Even the folds are unworn and neat.

Corners: Small, reasonably light tip rubs with very fine shape mostly retained. The odd gentle tip crease, but no major knocks.

Cover Summary: Like the record itself, this cover one of the best I have seen to date, and a match for my own personal copy – I have a full run of the Straight and Bizarre albums, I am only missing a UK copy of this title. A nice example to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined ‘Zapped’ promotional inner featuring Zappa and Cohen. This is little short of as-made with no splits or creasing. Hardly aged and rarely seen like this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a lovely visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very few, equally light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. US records also mark easier, the vinyl I am certain is ‘softer’ than European ones, but this has avoided any issues. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This groundbreaking album plays up to, and beyond it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Overall, this offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this early US pressing significantly I feel sure. Over time, I have heard a few other copies, including modern repressings – and most have disappointed. This, overall, one of the best I have heard to date, pressing quality is very variable and remains a lottery unless play-graded. I am certain this record has been played very lightly, and has been well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record with any reminders of a disc around 47 years old few and light, this is one that merits strong recommendation. Indeed knowing this album well, it could prove an upgrade for some, as I reiterate, many are not pressed this cleanly.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
