Description

Original 1969 pressing of this blistering Hendrix and Blue Cheer-inspired power trio's only album, "King of the Black Sunrise" by Thunder & Roses on the United Artists label.  It's hard not to think of how similar this unknown Philadelphia band's name is to a much better-known hard rock band featuring Axl Rose and Slash.  And while there are similarities between the two bands, Thunder & Roses arrived nearly two decades earlier, and as far as I know, no one in the earlier band ever wore a KFC bucket on his head.  Musically, there's a lot of thunder here, but few roses - this is Philadelphia in 1969, not San Francisco.  The thunder is clearly inspired by a trio of heavy guitar bands - Blue Cheer, Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.  Check out "White Lace and Strange", a great title even if it kinda steals from the Who - it starts out with a riff similar to the Nazz's "Open My Eyes", then settles into a heavy Cream vibe a la "Swlabr", with vocals that are pure Jack Bruce.  But where Cream had God as their lead guitarist, Chris Bond of Thunder & Roses was clearly touched by hand of the Devil - his solos BURN with a demonic fire and are laced with pyrotechnics like a  young and hungry Ted Nugent, back when he was in the Amboy Dukes.  T & R's cover of Hendrix's "Red House" takes an approach closer to Led Zeppelin's version of the blues - think "I Can't Quit You" - with killer scuzzy heavy guitar and pounding Bonham drums mixed good and loud.  "King of the Black Sunrise" is the trippiest excursion here, a "Third Stone From the Sun" style Hendrix guitar instrumental with solar wind sound effects and the shrieking of interstellar seagulls that recalls the eerie break in Pink Floyd's "Echoes".  So if you like your psychedelic rock heavy and hairy, this Philadephia power trio has the testosterone-riddled album for you.  Just don't get 'em confused with that OTHER "and Roses" band.  This one's got no "Chinese Album" in the works.  Original 1969 pressing on the United Artists label.  Cover in VG++ shape with some ringwear, cut corner.  Vinyl plays VG to VG+ with some crackle and a few pops.  Winning bidder pays $4.00 media mail shipping in the US, $8 air mail to Canada, $14 air mail everywhere else.  Paypal, Bidpay, cash, checks and money orders accepted.  Please check out my other auctions for more obscure pop, psych and garage albums, and I will combine shipping for multiple wins!
