CAUTION NOTE: This Test Pressing has an area on the rim missing, this has NO affect on the full (and practically perfect) reproduction of the album. BUT, great care must be made when placing the stylus on the record or it cause damage to the stylus. Clearly, this record would not have passed inspection for commercial sale, but it did all what was required for a Test Pressing of the music. .

Run-Out Groove Etchings: ‘TICH AND QUACKERS’ / ‘MANCHESTER UNITED’

Musicians: Brian Downey - drums, percussion; Scott Gorham - lead guitar, guitars; Phil Lynott - bass, vocals, acoustic guitar; Brian Robertson - lead guitar, guitars.

Brief Info: The band’s sixth album and most successful to date, it got them finally noticed in the United States. Including their famous hit single ‘The Boys are Back in Town’, but the real highlight is the finale ‘Emerald’ which remains a classic track. This a very rare UK Test Pressing with the MANCHESTER UNITED etching on the run out, this only on first pressings. But this goes beyond a first pressing as such. The record plays beautifully throughout, but the rim has a manufacture fault that has NO effect on the music at all – again great caution on stylus placement as mentioned clearly in the blue paragraph further up.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. The single thickness front has a shaped die-cut window, entrance for the record in via the inside to right. Printed and made in England by Howards.

Cover Front: Firstly the cut out window that reveals the cartoon interior: for a change this is totally undamaged with neat, crisp edges with any burr traces being minuscule. This area often catches and tears which this has avoided. The top edge left has a burr and scuff, but little else to fault on this quite fragile front that often wears badly.

Cover Back: The back has little wear either, one thumb semi-crease and a few fine ones on the edges. The lack of ringwear always a plus on this one.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside at all, the perilous entrance solid and undamaged.

Top Edges: The front left has a burr with fine scuffing on the front. Both remains straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: Both barely worn, very neat and impressive.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Crisp and neat again and meeting up flush and parallel.

Spine and Text: Single thickness and very vulnerable to all forms of wear and damage. Solid, straight with minimal compression and no crushing, any tilt minimal. The surface and folds have little wear, small rubbing to the ends, mostly the top, any rubbing or chipping little, small and light. The fine text present and showing no wear of any note.

Corners: Small and modest rubs with very fine or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this classic Vertigo cover, not perfect but these are never easy. It should please many collectors. This came with a hard white inner sleeve.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. This of course, NOT taking into account of the manufacture flaw on the rim, again that has NO affect on the audio of this record which plays beautifully throughout. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface trace traces ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super Test record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Playing this record MUST be made with extreme caution of stylus placement on both sides, there is a fair degree of vinyl missing from an area of the rim that does NOT encroach into the music. This significant rarity plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, barely anything noted at all, this an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few examples will outperform this ultimate first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Finding these white label copies in this hardly used condition is incredibly rare and they seldom get seen like this. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
