Up for auction is this rarely seen copy of "The Wildwood Rock" and "Dear What About You" by The Wildwood Trio on Dixie # 1, A and B. The trio features vocal and rhythm guitar by Fred Netherton, electric guitar by Dwight Houston and string bass by Jerry Myers. This is one of the rawest rockabilly records I have ever heard. Fred Netherton's vocal on "Wildwood Rock" has that wailing bluegrass sound, much in the school of Bill Monroe, and this side has that classic rockabilly sound. "Dear What About You" is more of a straight-forward bluesy country side. I grade this record as a solid VG. The vinyl has a nice gloss with some light scuffs but really no scratches that will obstruct the play. The surface is really quiet and not grainy or sizzly like so many of these offbeat pressings. The record is not worn but I detect just the slightest distortion in the high points of the vocal passages. The sound is not the highest in fidelity and has a more full bassy tone to it. It sounds like it was recorded in a barn on a two track home recorder with one microphone. The labels are a nice buff yellow and have some soil rings but no stickers and no writing. I can see a very tiny label tear on the "n" in "Fred Netherton" on the "Wildwood Rock" side. The only markings on the vinyl is the word "rock" etched in the trailoff on side A and "lonesome" on side B. I understand this record was reproduced in Germany but this is an original copy and I found it in a homemade plywood record box surrounded by Webb Pierce and Jim Reeves 45s. This is really a neat, rare item and if you've been seeking this record, I doubt you'll ever see a nicer copy. It's the first copy I've seen in 25 years of collecting.
