Label/Format: Track – original matt intense black format, these early copies look very slightly textured, but actually feel quite smooth to the fingertip. Later copies had grey-black labels with a more semi-shiny surface and invariably pressed thinner with different matrix details.

Label Conditions: Clean, fresh, intense black and attractive with only quite light spindle marks. A few longer ones but with normal full-on viewing, these hardly show. These really deep black matt labels are very revealing, but this pair still look very nice.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. Around average.

Rarity: Taken purely on the title, this is not a rare album as such. But clean early pressed copies are a different matter. Also this copy includes the very collectable and scarcer ‘HEAD HUNTERS’ ‘Get a Head’ inner sleeve. This is one of the most sort-after inners and early copies of this album with this famous one inside are most prized. This beautiful vintage collage insert includes pictures of bands and artists that recorded on Polydor, Track, Atlantic, MGM, Verve, Karma Sutra, DG and Buddah Records – sounds a lot of labels, but try finding this inner easily. Only a few select albums ever included it and not all copies of this album did. Not only is this included with arguably the greatest rock album ever made, it’s in superb condition. Please check out the pictures of this elusive inner, this a work-of-art in it’s own right. Even more importantly – the record plays with supreme sound – I barely detected anything of any note bar sublime music with hugely impressive clean audio quality. An original that does this magnificent release full justice – this is never to be taken for granted.

Brief Artist & Album Info: ‘Who’s Next’ is simply one of my favourite rock albums of all-time. This amazing set has it all – stunning vocals, incredible musicianship and some of the band’s greatest ever songs played to virtuoso rock standards. Just listen to rock’s greatest ever drummer (well he gets my vote anyway), Keith Moon’s power-house percussion is top of the premier league and sets standards few others even got close too. This is a master-class of quality, it simply shows up modern music for what it really is – mediocre at best – this is one of the most exciting records ever issued. Most-all collectors will already know and probably already own this masterpiece, but this lovely copy with the rarer inner makes this extra special. Every song, is a classic, faultless and flawless, this is Daltrey, Moon, Entwistle and Townshend at the peak of their powers – timeless brilliance and no collection could or should ever be without a copy. Always a pleasure to offer such a fine copy too, the cover has very modest traces of wear and the record plays with barely anything unwanted with all the dynamic fidelity only the early-pressed records really offer. That elusive Head Hunter’s inner puts the icing on the cake, that also in fantastic condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: but actually looks better. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in Engand by MacNeill Press. Includes the scarce Head Hunter’s inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Not a cover that wears well, but this one is really impressive overall. The front has little to really fault bar a couple of gentle press marks near the left edge and a tiny bottom left corner tip rub. It remains clean, fresh and attractive, any creasing very few and faint – and no sticker issues. The artwork of the famous four seen in close-up will seldom be seen a great deal better.

Cover Back: The matt black back is always difficult and seldom seen devoid of considerable wear and especially ringwear. In terms of rubbing, hardly any and only a very small fine surface crease near the top right corner. The main issue are a small cluster of press marks near the bottom left of the graphic area box. The lack of ringwear and ink erosion are major plus points and this again will not prove easy to find much better as an original.

Top Edge: Mainly very straight with just one very small and equally light surface rub.

Bottom Edge: Mainly light patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with little wear, any thickening gentle and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge, there appears to be no enhancements to any part of this cover.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with a little, quite mild compression near the centre. The ends are quite deeply pinched in manufacture which always gives a more distinctive look to the early-made sleeves. All text is perfect and unworn and even the black surface and folds have escaped any rubbing which is quite unusual.

Corners: Mainly light tip rubs with very fine to near excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very nice looking cover – the lack of ringwear, rubbing and grubbiness on the main areas is not so easily found – few will escape without some edge rubbing, and here little and far less than most seen. So often seen with sticker tears and other damage, this a splendid example and it should please many collectors.

The ‘Head Hunters’ – Get a Head Inner: NEAR MINT: and only the merest whisker of a very rare full Mint grading. A famous inner sleeve that was NOT included with all copies of this record, far from it in fact, but I always do my best to find copies that include it because it has become almost an integral part of this album. This is lined and with robust flipback construction (both pristine), with no tears and no creasing at all. Even crinkle of any note has been avoided, that is near impossible. With a rich dark, matt finish, this can fade and age badly too, yes it can even suffer ringwear and often does. This has escaped it simply because the record was not stored inside for any great length of time (there lies the difference). The adhesive on the top opening edge has very lightly darkened on the inside, but hardly registers on the outside. So a barely aged, fresh and attractive example with no edge splits or tears (and no repairs). A classic rare inner with all the artists you would imagine included in the collage from the aforementioned labels. A select few are: Led Zeppelin; Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention; Rory Gallagher; CSN; Ritchie Havens; The Who, Melanie et al. A class item, getting rare in-itself and highly prized and sort-after, especially so in such fine condition – if you need this splendid historical inner sleeve, this could prove the perfect upgrade.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and the merest whisker off a full Mint(–) grade for a played record. A superb visual copy with any surface traces tiny and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. Very clean with fine shine and quite solidly pressed. With so many early examples played to destruction, this beauty the pure opposite and looks hardly run-in with two of the cleanest playing surfaces yet. Even more important is sound quality, this one really delivers on that account as well, any plays were made only a quality record player and played with due care. A lovely early-pressed original that will please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sublime album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault at all. Strong, totally distortion-free sound (never take this for granted on a complex recording like this), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – an album to play loud, the power of this record still astonishes even today and I never tire of hearing a very clean copy. Any surface sounds barely even registered and nothing spoiled the enjoyment of this evergreen masterpiece. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played little and appears carefully handled. This record will prove difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest recommendation. Yes this really could be the greatest rock album ever made, ‘I call it a Bargain – the best you ever had’? – I feel another play coming on.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
