Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area bar one tiny surface chip on side A.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 45 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Rare: and copies that include a superb picture cover are higly elusive and prized. The record is little short of immaculate and has probably only been played two or three times. Even the white inner sleeve is in fantastic condition with no edge splits. An original Who EP for the connoisseur collector, this will prove immensely difficult to match let alone find much better. In this barely used condition, a thing of geniune rare beauty.

Brief Info: The best description of this legendary EP can be quoted from the back cover:

“On the 29th January, 1965, The Who made their very first Television appearance before an astonished teenage audience in Rediffusion’s Television top rating pop show ‘Ready Steady Go’. Their performance of ‘I Can’t Explain’ was a sensation – viewers had never before seen a group that visually and musically flouted every known convention. Severeal appearance and nearly two years later, the group took over the entire show – it was even called ‘Ready Steady Who’ – and feautred on this E.P. are some of the best tracks from a show that ended in smoke bombs, smashed guitars and the kind of impromptu chaos that only The Who can create. – Francis Hitching, Producer: Ready Steady Go.”.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT++, and this being ultra critical. A typically very thin and flimsy cover with front laminate that ends on the back via a smooth spine and two exterior flipbacks top and bottom. This has the original ‘WARNING’ – Copyright subsists in all REACTION recordings.’ text. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day (E.J.D. imprint on cover).

Lamination & Front: This very sort-after and totally fantastic original picture cover looks truly stunning and simply blows away it’s considerable age. Still very shine, clear and fresh and all fully adhered. Barely any traces of any creasing, friction rubs or dulling and the graphics of the band are simply breathtaking. Very rarely, this has barely any record ‘saw-tooth’ impression or any impressions at all, the only way this could have avoided this is for the record to have been stored outside the main cover and how many will ever be found like that? The difference is there for all to see, this front is simply gorgeous.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive with any traces of grubbiness to the white areas being tiny and minuscule. Again no ringwear or rubbing with no damages at all. The flipbacks are solidly adhered with crisp neat ends that have only slightly darkened. I do not think this is grime, but a natural darkening of exposed card. Anyway, minus that, I would have surely graded Mint(-) and justifibly so. This supreme E. J. Day cover back also defies it’s age and potential to wear.

Top Edge: Unworn and practically dead straight.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp to very sharp with barely any wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this vulnerable edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and again mainly straight with no wear. Made very thinly with no text of course as per the other closed edges.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creases very tiny and minor and all retain excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A rare 1966 and classic EP cover time has largely over-looked, along with it’s original owner. A beautiful all-round example of this prized and legendary sleeve, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This connoisseur-quality item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT++, and again this is being somewhat critical. A plain white inner with open window and unlined. This has aged little and is still white and fresh with all edges secure. A neat crisp window has one microscopic nick only and any creasing (more like semi-creasing) is light and confined to one corner only. The recessed and fragile top opening is also in superb condition with minimal traces of usage.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT++, a superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed for a seven inch. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with only very few ultra light and faint surface marks (as hairlines), seen under angled light. Few examples of this one will ever be seen better or more lightly played for sure. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent record plays up to, and even exceeds it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. It almost makes me cringe to know what this and other classic seven inch records could and usually were played on back in their day. No small wonder most-all that surface are in very poor or even trashed conditions. But let’s face it, that’s what they were made for, to be played and enjoyed on the equipment of the day – heavy tracking, thick stylus that ground into the fragile groove walls. Often blunted or chipped destroying the sound in one single play. Hence even some clean looking mono records can be disappointing for sound with crackle, sound clipping and even distortion. That’s why a play-grade is essential. Groove-wear is the invisible menace of any record and only comes to light when played. I am delighted to state, this wonderful EP has no problems and sounds fantastic. This too on highly revealing equipment that gives the ultimate test for such a record. Few copies will outperform this very first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. Who fans, do NOT lose this beauty.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
