Here is another gem from my own mostly Nr Mint personal collection (which I am selling off gradually to lessen the pain...) I have been collecting very rare vinyl for a long time now. As a collector, I have been very critical about the condition of the records I have chosen to buy over the years, and only selected the most pristine 1st pressings from all over the UK.  My collection is therefore filled with not only the rarest UK 1st pressings, but also records of the highest grade quality condition, some of the best you will probably ever come across. Sadly, all will be finding new homes in the near future. As I said, I am very strict with my grading, so when I describe a record as Nr Mint - you can rest assured that it will be a true Nr Mint record (I never grade any records as Mint because Mint does not exist in the world of vintage vinyl - in my opinion, as soon as the record has been taken home from the store it is no longer Mint!!) I hope you enjoy my listings.

You are bidding on what can only be described as the most pristine 1969 U.K. 'Near Mint' 1st pressing of the incredible double LP 'Tommy' by The Who, that I have ever see or owned! Firstly let get the 1st press credential out of the way. The sheer weight of these two discs tells you all you need to know about their first press credentials. However, there are a host of other, more exact, features that identify this as the earliest possible 1969 UK 1st pressing. Firstly, the black/silver Track labels are matt textured, not shiny like the 1970's repressings. The labels also contain the crucial 'Double Album' and '(Record 1/2)' text in the left hand side of each label! All the subsequent labels omit this text! There is also no text printed under the double disc 'ST 33' logos on the right hand side of each label (all later pressings contained the set. number underneath). Then we move on to the matrix, and we find the earliest 1st press A1//B1//A1//B1 Matrix endings! This is the real deal! The booklet also contains the correct and mega important 'printed' unique number in the bottom right-hand corner of the front page (this one is 52280). Moving onto the 1st issue sleeve, it has the correct E. J. Day manufacture credit  and is thickly laminated as only the very first UK pressings were (all subsequent pressings were not laminated!). Now we get on the condition of this very special record... These discs have only ever been played once before! They are simply Near Mint!!! I have never seen discs this good! They are even in more pristine condition than repressed discs! Finding true U.K. 1st press Tommy discs like this is impossible, believe me, I have searched for years!

There are NO Hairlines, NO Scratches, NO Groovewear, NO warping, NO Scuffs - Not even any Paperlines!!!! In fact there are NO blemishes of any kind to these two discs!!! They are both pristine!! Which brings me nicely along the the play-grade, and it is a belter! It never saw one of the harsh 1960's mono needles that destroyed many records of the day. It has a beautiful loud clear and defined 1st press stereo punch that will blow you away! There is NO background static, hiss, pops, crackle of skips! It plays perfectly cleanly! The best copy I have heard! I have to keep reminding myself that I am describing a 40 year old record here, not one made last week!!! I can say nothing else about this chunky 1st press record - it's absolutely perfect and Near Mint!!! These 'true' Stereo 1st pressings were straight from the masters and nothing even gets close to them today, especially when you find one in this kind of pristine audio condition! They play with a very loud punch but also deep clear warm chiming clarity and have to be heard to be believed! This is the best pressing you will hear and is far, far superior to the more common reissue pressings. Absolutely beautiful!!! The thick quality pressed chunky 1960's vinyl looks and feels great (it is very heavy!).

The bottom line is that these discs and sleeve etc are in STUNNING condition throughout!!! You will not find a better example! Like all 1st press copies of this legendary album, on the rare occasions it turns up today it almost always has been trashed; in terrible condition with lots of marks & scratches etc. This is because so few of these were ever initially produced. Remember, when this was released in 1969, nothing like it had ever been seen before; it was seen as a massively risky concept album, and Track only pressed a very limited quantity to cover any potential risk of the band bombing during this period. The album was only re-pressed when the label was sure supply would meet demand, it was then pressed in much greater reissue quantities. Aside from being the true UK 1st pressing, what makes this one SO rare is its absolutely STUNNING condition!!! This thick & chunky vinyl has the most beautiful shop-fresh, deep glass-like shine I have ever seen, it really looks as if this record could have been pressed yesterday - it is that good!!! You do not see copies like this in the UK anymore, they all dried up years ago!

This record is pure museum quality stuff and as such the bidding will be high, but trust me when I say this is one record well worth pushing the boat out for, you will never see another copy in this condition. A very serious record indeed and essential for any Near Mint Who/Psych/Prog. UK 1st press collection... Please see below for a detailed overall description... This record is in stunning immaculate condition!!! The Classic 1st press Black/Silver Track centre labels are in pristine Near Mint condition with NO Tears, NO Peeling, NO Grubbyness, NO Scribbles and NO unwanted writing of any kind!!! There is just the faintest trace of a solitary spindle line on each side!!! Finding these labels with this kind of lack of spindle lines is impossible!!! Please see the close-up images I have provided below. I can safely tell you that this record has only ever seen a turntable once before. Play grading for this listing was done very lightly on a high grade Mitchell turntable so, to all intents and purposes, it doesn't really count as an additional play. The gramophone rims containing the all-important 1st press Matrix are also obviously Mint!!!

As described above - the thick & chunky 1st press discs themselves are in impossible ***Nr Mint*** condition!!! The fragile 1st press laminated E.J. Day tri-fold sleeve is also in superb condition and is the best example I have seen in a very long time!!!  These 1st press sleeves suffered considerable wear (remember they had to carry around 2 heavy 1st press slabs of vinyl!!), with edge wear, spine wear and ring wear all very common and usually quite severe. This one however is simply stunning, as I mentioned above, it was my own keepers copy and was protected in a heavy-duty Polythene sleeve from new!!! I can say without hesitation that it will be one of the best examples you will probably ever come across, (it is much better than most of the later sleeves!!!) There are NO Tears, NO Scribbles and NO unwanted writing etc of any kind!!! The corners are super sharp and it has retained 100% of its just pressed box shape (I have tried to show this on the images).  I must also briefly mention the condition of the laminate here, which is absolutely phenomenal!!! It is so pristine it almost looks 'wet' in appearance!!! These sleeves are not usually as perfectly preserved as this and the laminate usually becomes very scuffed and dull looking, losing its shine. Not this one, it is pristine and looks just as it did from new!!! The opening edge only has the most minimal of feathering and the 1st issue box is beautiful with NONE of the usual laminate cracking!!! There just a very thin line of wear on the bottom of the spine that follows the edge, it is hardly noticeable and. All in all, a stunning example of this very rare sleeve that easily grades as Excellent++++!! Believe me, like all my other records this is in no way over-graded!!! A truly superb example of an incredibly rare sleeve!!!

The 1st issue numbered booklet is also in pristine **Near Mint** condition!!! It has only ever been removed from inside the sleeve once before this and is as new; crisp and flat with no creases/ scribbles/grubbiness etc. Like the rest of this tremendous LP, it is pristine!

This is complete with both original 1st press Atlantic poly-lined 'Warning Box' inner sleeves which have the correct 'British Patent No.' text and the 'Made in England' text. The are all blemish free with intact poly-linings, and, like the sleeve, have no unwanted writing/scribbles etc. on them. It is also very important to note that neither sleeve has seam wear or splits, all have mint seams and opening edges with no tears, nicks etc. There is just some creasing and that's it!!! A classic must-have album for any high-grade psych/prog collection. An absolutely essential (and massively rare) UK 1st pressing!!! Don't miss this one!!! I can virtually guarantee that this is the absolute best Mint- copy of this rare UK 1st pressing you will ever see!!! Please so not miss it as it is my own best copy in Mint- condition, it has been archived for years and has barely ever seen the light of day. I do not have anymore in this kind of condition, so when this has gone it's gone...
