MAYBE, A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY, TO KNOW YOU OWN THE ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING OF THE WHO - MY GENERATION. AS NO ONE ACTUALLY KNOWS WHICH WAS PRESSED FIRST, I AM OFFERING YOU THE CHANCE TO OWN BOTH MATRIX NUMBERS 1B & 2B (FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THIS, PLEASE READ BELOW)

MATRIX NUMBERS

MG-10256-1B & MG-10257-1B - VINYL = VERY GOOD+ (There are several light scratches and several light surface marks on both sides, which do not affect play. But on playing the record it plays throughout, although there are some clicks and surface noises)

UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS ONLY 1 COVER = VERY GOOD (no tears or rips, and very few marks on back(see pics), but has been repaired neatly with selotape along top edge, the writing on the spline is clearly visable.

For 2 records records, & 1 cover, that are 45 years old, they ain't done bad !!

Indeed there exist two record versions with those different matrix numbers and both are the 1965 UK mono edition. The original edition of the album sold out in a few months. It is assumed that a second edition was pressed with the 1B - 2B difference but it is not clear. And it is not clear which one was released earlier if any. At first I would say that the 1B matrix record was released first but I have doubts because the 1B matrix record is offered more often than the 2B matrix record. This gives hint that the 2B version would be much rarer which could mean that this was the first pressing.

The 1B / 2B number is to do with the production process of a record. Normally records were recorded by bands on tape in the studio. Of course, tapes can't be used to produce vinyls. What you need is a press stamp. So at first, a so called father stamp was produced with the contents of the recording tape. The father is a negative foil and is the original master stamp of the record production. On basis of this negative stamp, a positive mother foil is pressed. The mother is used for quality control and - if the quality is good - to press in turn a negative son foil. Finally the son foil is used as the stamp for the final vinyl duplication. Due to low technical standards in the 60's, a son foil could only be used for a limited quantity of vinyl duplications. Then the son foil must be renewed and changed. Decca used a unique matrix notification as it reads as follow. The '1' and '2' in the matrix number names the number of the son foil (first foil, second foil), the 'B' in the matrix notification names the foil cutting engineer.

Which was made 1st, the 1B matrix ?

Theoretically yes, except they produced two son foils at the same time in expection of a large quantity production series and then it can't be said if they used foil 1 first or foil 2 first. It is sure that they are made of the same original master. The master tape has the number 10256 for the A-side father and number 10257 for the B-side father which is part of the matrix notification. If a different father was produced then it needed another tape number because during the father production process tape and father need to run simultaneously without any break. So the matrix number parts 10256 and 10257 are sure clues that the same original master was used and that this is the original My Generation pressing.
