This record rarely turns up now. The WHO's status as one of the most important bands to emerge from the 60s and one of the few to go on to achieve such mythical status would lead you to think that their 60s albums would turn up every day, but, quite simply, they don't! I buy many private collections and know from first-hand experience just how few original 60s WHO albums are lurking in people's houses! Not that many! And of them all, this, their first LP release, is the hardest to find now, especially in such respectable condition!

VINYL IN EXCELLENT-  CONDITION
SLEEVE IN VERY GOOD(+) CONDITION

A very nice condition copy of a very collectable record. The vinyl is very clean, and displaying light wear only, and playing perfectly throughout. There are a few light nicks to Side 1 track 6, but they do not sound at all when played on my Thorens. Otherwise, a couple of inconsequential light marks, but the vinyl is very nice looking, and the audio produced is superb. Absolutely nothing to cause concern! Very nice indeed, and incredibly hard to find like this. Most copies that turn up now are more than a little worn. This album usually took quite a hammering, but that is not the case here! The labels also confirm that this record has been well looked after, with, yes, spindle marks, but no significant damage or writing. The front laminated 1st issue sleeve is strong and largely undamaged, with light storage wear and mild ageing, and no serious creases, no edge splits or tears. Many of these sleeves turn up with tears and edge splits, as they are quite lightweight for a 60s sleeve, and non-flipback, and as WHO LPs were played a lot, they soon got grubby and worn. There is a small amount of wear to the rear, upper-left corner, a surface graze where a name has been carefully removed (see below). That is the extent of damage in evidence to the sleeve, with otherwise, light ageing/yellowing but nothing major. A very nice, respectable, early 1st pressing copy of a classic, must-have album for 60s collectors.

Few bands in the history of rock & roll were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notoriously intense live performances demonstrated. The group was a whirlwind of activity, as the wild Keith Moon fell over his drum kit and Pete Townshend leaped into the air with his guitar, spinning his right hand in exaggerated windmills. Vocalist Roger Daltrey strutted across the stage with a thuggish menace, as bassist John Entwistle stood silent, functioning as the eye of the hurricane. These divergent personalities frequently clashed, but these frictions also resulted in a decade's worth of remarkable music. As one of the key figures of the British mod movement of the mid-'60s, the Who were a dynamic and undeniably powerful sonic force. They often sounded like they were exploding conventional rock and R&B structures with Townshend's furious guitar chords, Entwistle's hyperactive bass lines and Moon's vigorous, chaotic drumming. Unlike most rock bands, the Who based their rhythm on Townshend's guitar, letting Moon and Entwistle improvise wildly over his foundation, while Daltrey belted out his vocals. This was the sound the Who thrived on in concert, but on record they were a different proposition, as Townshend pushed the group toward new sonic territory. He soon became regarded as one of the finest British songwriters of his era, as songs like "The Kids Are Alright" and "My Generation" became teenage anthems, and his rock opera Tommy earned him respect from mainstream music critics.
