The Who : Live At Leeds A1 / B1 1st Press Black Lettering + 13 Inserts Rare 1970

This relatively rare first pressing with the black lettering on the front cover is STUNNING!  In all my years I have never seen or heard one as impressive as this and is the true definition of a FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic.  There is basically no interference, a couple of very quiet static 'moments' but I am sure they are meant to be there as described below.  The clarity, depth, power and definition of the audio is of a standard I have not heard before on this classic live album.  S1 is stunning but S2 is just on another level!  Here you have the most complete versions of the extended 'My Generation' and 'Magic Bus' that you ever likely to hear.

The vinyl is in beautiful condition and has hardly ever been on a turntable before and indeed there is still some vinyl flecking around the S2 spindle hole.

The iconic brown 'bootleg' cover is also in fantastic condition with no wear basically.  Ok one minor faint crease near the top of the front cover but it really has been so well looked after over the last 54 years.  All the inserts (13 here!) are in superb condition including the large Marquee poster which was issued with the genuine first pressings.  The original inner sleeve remains in great condition also.  This is one stunning archive 'package'!

It is rumoured that only 300 were 'pressed' with the black print on the front cover but how true that is I'm not so sure as they do seem to sell at various times!  Regardless of that the 'black print' one is a genuine first press and you will not find a better one than this!

Visual description

The vinyl is in pristine condition and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  The vinyl has hardly been played and as stated the S2 spindle hole still has some vinyl flecking around it!  Under a bright light I can only see a handful of small ultra faint hairlines, it could hardly look any more impressive.  The run groves are immaculate and the Track Record labels are stunning with no obvious spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on 'Young Man' has a couple of very quiet statics only and Daltrey's opening vocal is close to perfect with only a half second static 'moment' which again is very quiet.  This seems to be a common feature with this LP, after all it does say on the labels 'Crackling noises ok do not correct'!  The silent sections during this section play with sublime clarity and the long instrumental passage is absolutely stunning!  Townshend's work is so strong and powerful and Moon's ballistic drumming and Entwistle's deep bass add so much to their classic sound.  This entire sequence could not play any better, the sonic quality is phenomenal and there is no distortion on the top end.  The final vocal has no background and overall Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

With complete silence in the dead wax the spoken 'intro' on 'Substitute' has no background and as the music comes in the playback is just as impressive.  The opening vocal is faultless and it continues in the same precise way with no interference.  The power and depth of the audio is equal to how it would have played back in '70 and Mint is well deserved.

The 'heavy' intro on 'Summertime Blues' plays with stunning precision and the opening vocal section is of the same high end standard.  From then on it plays with impeccable quality and you can turn it up to max with no distortion, the true test of this classic live album!  The mid instrumental is so powerful and the final vocal has no intrusion either.  Mint

'Shakin' All Over' has just one static 'sound' during the first vocal but that is the only 'flaw' if you can call it that.  In a sense it shouldn't be downgraded because of that as I am sure they are meant to be there.  I've sold numerous copies of this album and you so often find them!  I refer you to my previous comment!  Another superb instrumental section and couple of minor statics on the final vocal - in the same place as the previous copy I sold!  Once again I think Mint- is fair.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Much like S1 the run in on S2 is so clean and then the intro on the classic 'My Generation...' plays with great power and depth and the opening vocal has only a hint of light static at the start.  The first 'bass' instrumental is flawless as is the next vocal section and it continues to play with outstanding power and definition and nowhere is that more obvious than during the next instrumental section.  The See Me, Feel Me... excerpt is 'as new' and the quiet section that follows plays beautifully with no intrusion.  I don't want to repeat myself but the next powerful instrumental is incredible!  So strong and the audio is so rich and deep.  The following quiet passage is of course very quiet and yet the clarity is amazing, I have never heard it play with such delicate precision.  Wow!  I can't describe every section but needless to say the rest of this instrumental is 'as new', honestly the playback is STUNNING!  The next quiet section does not even have a single dust tick!  As the volume increases again there is no 'muddiness' to the sound, the audio definition is first class and the remainder of this 14 minute epic plays with sublime quality also.  Moon's ballistic percussion in conjunction with Townshend's guitar is what makes this an instant classic and you can see why this live album is so highly regarded.  The end section is phenomenal, the clarity, depth and power is out of this world!  This has to be the definitive version and Mint is the only grade I can give.

The 'percussive' intro on 'Magic Bus' keeps up this fine standard and Daltrey's opening vocal has no background at all.  It then plays with stunning quality from that point on, Entwistle's bass very much to the fore here.  Every vocal and instrumental section plays with unbelievable sonic quality, loud and quiet in equal measure, there is no intrusion on the audio.  The high octane sections plays with incredible power and I cannot praise this version highly enough.  Moon's work is exemplary and to the final note it plays with real precision.  Audio does not get any better than this!  The final section is 'as new' much like the entire track!  This is Mint all day long - without doubt the finest S2 I have ever heard.

The 'Bootleg' Cover, Inserts & Inner Sleeve

This is easily the most stunning example I have seen of this iconic cover and it is the first press one with the black print!  It is so clean and is totally unmarked which is a genuine rarity.  No exaggeration it is difficult to find any wear - the edges, spine and corners are in remarkable condition and there is no fading around the edges on either the front or back cover.  There is just one faint crease near the top edge on the front but that is being super critical!  The inside of the 'gatefold' is immaculate and the staples front and back are still firmly in place with no rusting.  This cover must have sealed in a vault for the last 54 years!  Visually stunning to say the least.

The 12 inserts + the large Marquee poster are in fantastic condition with barely any wear.  Only 2/3 have one tiny corner crease.  The Marquee poster was only issued with the first pressings and is 'as new'.

The original poly-lined 'Plastic Bags...' inner sleeve has no side splits or tears and only minimal creasing.  It is date coded 0370 and has hardly any age related fading.  A superb example.

Postage & Packaging

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
