THE WHO - THESE ARE THE WHO LIVE AT LEEDS.
HOLLAND ONLY FAN CLUB ISSUE - POLYDOR LABEL, SERIAL GS 124.
Here's a chance to own a rare copy of the Holland only Fan Club edition Live at Leeds. Do not confuse this with the German edition.
Released in 1970, Live at Leeds is widely believed to be the greatest live album to date. With so many re-issued and re-packaged versions now available (40th anniversary, deluxe CD, digitally re-mastered etc), It's easy to forget that this album was a masterpiece in it's original form. Townshend always insisted that the background noises captured on the master tapes added to the feel of the live shows, and instructed the engineers to leave them in when pressing the album. Assuming you have heard the original "Live at Leeds", it's hard to disagree with him. This particular album is the pressing that captures the sound that was meant to be heard. It was packaged for the Holland Fan Club in a sleeve Unique to Holland, and different to any other versions. (The German Fan Club edition has the same front sleeve, but a totally different back). Also, where the UK version had six tracks on it, this one has seven, taken from the same shows, and in a different running order. Here are the tracklistings in the order they appear. Notice the inclusion of "Heaven and Hell" which was not on the UK version.
SIDE 1 - YOUNG MAN BLUES ~ SUMMERTIME BLUES ~ SHAKIN' ALL OVER ~ MAGIIC BUS.
SIDE 2 - MY GENERATION ~ SUBSTITUTE ~ HEAVEN AND HELL.
Here's the gradings.
The sleeve is a laminated front which wraps around to the back edges. There is a small amount of laminate creasing, and a small patch of feathering on the opening edge. The rear is a glossy white card type, the faintest patch of ageing just showing on the left. There is a small split on the top left hand corner (photo 9).For a 41 year old sleeve, I will wager it has lasted better than the UK paper version!
The inner sleeve is the original die cut poly lined white paper type, bearing the print 22 / 71 II / N Still very clean with no rip's.
The record itself is stunning. Clean, glossy, looks unplayed. No scratches. No spindle marks on the labels, no stain's or tears. Excellent.
If you are looking for a "keeper" copy of this outstanding album, you would do well to find a better one than this. With the exception of the small split on the cover, it's in fantastic condition.
