Description

The Who : Live At Leeds A1/B1 1st Press UK 1970 w/very rare Black Stamp + All Inserts

This is the genuine first pressing on this 'live' album and for the majority it plays with excellent sound quality.  There are a small number of clicks only.

As any Who collector knows the cover with the Black Stamp on the front cover is the first issue and supposedly only 300 of these were produced hence the rarity.  This is an original and not a later re-print!  It also has all the inserts including the 'Marquee' poster (the 'Live at Leeds' ones came later) and the small photo of the band.

The 'bootleg' style cover is in excellent condition with very little shelf wear and all the staples remain firmly in place.

The inner sleeve is Ex+

The inserts are Ex+ although many are better!

Visual grading

Both sides of the vinyl have a number of faint hairlines but it remains in excellent order with no marks or scratches.  There is not an excessive amount of hairlines and only a couple are a little more obvious.  It still has a glossy sheen and whilst there is some spindle wear you can see it has not been over-played at all.

Play grading

'Young Man Blues' has only minimal static on the intro and then Daltrey's vocals for the next minute have barely any 'background' which is so impressive as generally it is just him singing with no instrumentation.  There are three light clicks about 1.5 minutes in but thereafter this track plays with stunning power and definition and only one further click.  The bass is so strong and there is no distortion at all.

'Substitute' again has minimal static on the intro and then plays with very strong audio.  There are 5/6 light clicks but they are largely lost in the power of the music.

There is then some crackle/a few clicks in the dead wax but as 'Summertime Blues' begins the audio is superb with no interference.  It continues in the same with great power and 'rocks out' loud and true.  There is just a hint of light static towards the end.

'Shakin' All Over' is similar and aside from a minimal amount of static it plays very well indeed with no intrusive clicks or pops.  The instrumental section has real depth and power and no distortion at all.  The final vocal just has a little static near the end.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The classic 'My Generation' on S2 begins in fine style with only light static and then plays with excellent clarity and very little 'background'.  Often heralded as one of the greatest 'live' albums of all time you can see why when you listen to this!  The heavier sections play with immense power and depth and whilst the quieter sections have a little static it is not intrusive in any way, it is relatively quiet.  Hence the 'Crackling Noises OK Do Not Correct' comment on the labels!  You can't fail but be impressed by the quality of the audio here, there are no clicks or pops and the warmth and depth of the sound is stunning.

The intro on 'Magic Bus' is very 'clean' and has no static, just one light click 30 seconds in.  As the track progresses the audio is very strong and it is only during the quieter section on the half way mark that you can hear a handful of light clicks of which only 2 or 3 are what I call intrusive.  From that point on the playback is sensational and the entire end section could hardly play any better.  The definition of the audio is superb and there is nothing that intrudes on the quality of the listen.  Plus you can turn it up loud without fear of distortion.  What and end!

In summary this rare and very collectable LP plays with very respectable sound but with only a few clicks.  In saying that the majority of the audio is very strong and has no interference and there is no persistent crackle at all and only minimal static.  What is impressive is that there is no distortion which is a rarity on this album.  There are no loud pops and no skips or jumps either - this I can confirm as I play every second of every record that I sell - and as stated all the inserts are included.

The Cover

The rare 'MacNeill' first press cover with the black stamp has very little shelf wear and remains very strong and as stated all of the staples are still firmly in place.  The only negative really is one small sticker removal mark top right.  All of the edges and spine are in great condition with no wear and the same applies to the corners.  The front cover is very clean with only some light marking next to the spine and the back cover is even cleaner with only very faint marking bottom right.  The inside is in lovely condition, practically 'as new'.  An excellent example at nearly 50 years old.

Inner Sleeve

The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags' inner has no splits or tears, barely any creasing and no marking either.  Great condition.

The Labels

There is some spindle wear on each side and a couple of tiny spots but there is no obvious marking or writing.

The Inserts

They are all in fine condition and all you can see is some minimal creasing on the top or bottom edge of a few of them, nothing major at all.  The 'Marquee' poster is included which came with the first pressing.
