Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with around moderate spindle marks. The record itself is clean and plays with mostly very impressive, dynamic mono sound.

Brief Info: The second Who album, their sound now progressing to more intricate, even experimental pop-rock with a distinct psych edge. Slightly less commercial than the classic debut. The lengthy title song was a suite split into six parts – clearly a stepping-stone into the major rock opera that was to follow in 1969 with ‘Tommy’. Such was the experimentation, it even features all four band members playing a wind instrument. Almost certainly due to the risque nature of the title, it was changed for the more sensitive American market to ‘Happy Jack, issued their on Decca Records. This very early A1/B1 UK copy looks and plays well with an attractive fresh cover, it even retains its 1966 date-coded inner sleeve. A few gentle surface marks yes, few records of this type, mode and era will avoid a the, but this copy has survived the perilous ‘mono’ time well and most-all of this record was a pleasure to play.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd. Includes the 1966 coded original inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides look impressive: the laminate retains fine shine and clarity. Reasonably mild dulling is seen under angled light, but registers little with normal full-on viewing. The lack of lifting is always great news on the very dark graphic covers – a fine sliver on the front spine edge, few can hope to show less. A few laminate creases, but again, amongst the least I have seen on this revealing sleeve. This colourful classic, and original vintage Who cover will prove difficult to find better.

Top Edge: Thin, but reasonably straight with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same – impressive for a storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This is superb, very clean and sharp with barely any thickening or wear. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, this proven by the width of the exposed end strips front and back where the laminate ends are. Seen end-on, it also reiterates how thin this card is as well.

Spine and Text: Again thin, but again impressive with any compression light. Solid, straight with all text perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this centred only a fraction low on a narrow depth. This delicate area will prove hard to find much better.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no bashes or noteworthy dinks.

Cover Summary: A really impressive all-round example of this thin and revealing 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. These vintage sleeve are seldom seen like this, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: with just one corner crease. It being the original Philips/Polydor style polylined inner with two crisp window circles and quite clear lining. All edges avoiding splits and no repairs, this has the 126 date-code, which translate to December 1966.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with only fine surface marks, mostly seen under bright light, there are no penetrating stylus scratches, so this plays impressively well and clean with little unwanted. Will any used 1966 mono record not have some of these almost as a bare minimum? Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors, but for visual purists who only want ‘perfect’ at any cost.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, mostly clear and dynamic mono sound – any hint of sound degrading minuscule, this being played on a very revealing stereo system for which this record was not really designed. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, the odd polite tick or blemish near impossible to avoid to such records – this is over 50-years-old and has been played. Overall an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*, this robust and tough, made in the era of quality. Few available original copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. One I enjoyed immensely and it can be highly recommended, unless total perfection is mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
