Label/Format: Track – intense black format with matt smooth surfaces. These look exactly the same as the first pressing, not like the later Track labels that were more like a grey-black.

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: fresh, clean and very black indeed. Any spindle traces are minuscule and this record appears hardly played at all.

Cat Number: 2407008.

Mode / Speed: Stereo (although the cover states ‘mono’) / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 154 grams. A very heavy weight with no skimping on quality on this repressing which is probably heavier than originals.

Rarity: These Backtrack albums are fairly scarce and limited. They are seldom seen with records in this beautiful condition either.

Brief Info: The Who’s second album issued in December 1966, here repressed to the highest quality within the brief ‘Backtrack’ series in 1970. Yes the cover was now a somewhat bland variant, but the record itself is simply magnificent on the early intense black Track format and with substantial weight. The first album beat sound had now largely been replaced with more complex and individual band ideas with all members writing credited to writing. But Townshend now comes to the forefront with his immense songwriting talent. The final title song paved the way for the full concept albums that were soon to follow. With first issues commanding vast prices – indeed an original with a record in this condition certainly would – this is the perfect copy for those simply wanting to experience the early Who sound on vinyl, which in all tense and purpose, is exactly the same in terms of quality and sound as a first issue – just the cover is changed – and you cannot play a cover (of course). This superb heavy Track record barely played, unruined by heavy-tracking mono stylus, a ‘A Quick One’ that can be enjoyed to the absolute maximum – makes perfect sense to me.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): a single format with matt, smooth surfaces and totally different artwork to the original.

Front & Back: A little mild, very patchy rubbing, minor marks and just slightly aged. No sticker marks or tears and any rim rubbing far less than usually seen on these. A gentle crease adjacent to the spine fold on the back shows little.

Top & Bottom Edges: The top has little wear, a small few mostly tiny surface chips. The bottom storage edge has light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, mild thickening here and there viewed end-on, guaranteed untrimmed, the record enters here.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with only modest compression. The text practically all there and strong, just a little clipping to the odd character. Any surface rubbing minimal, most of any present near the very ends.

Corners: Moderate tip rubs with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Hardly the most exciting of covers, but this wear-prone variant has less than most seen. It should please many collectors – the star piece of this set is the record.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a Polydor style polylined inner that is date-coded 1071 (October 1971), so this record and pressing is still very early. Minimal ageing with two crisp undamaged window circles and very clear, fresh lining. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Just a little discolouration as most inners this age acquire.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): or better. A superb 44-year-old record that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy barely even played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule (or less) even as seen critically under bright angled light. This is as close to my full Mint(–) grading as any record this great age will be. Visually a super record that should please all collectors. Try finding an original, that will be exactly the same in terms of audio quality in this fantastic condition.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant, more varied early Who classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. The cover aside, this actual record has all the look, feel and sound of the 1966 first issue – this is a fantastic listen and copy.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
