The Who : A Quick One A2 / B1 1st Mono Press 1966

This very first mono pressing plays to a very high standard with very little intrusion.  There are no clicks or pops and only a couple of minor ticks, no background static either.  As many Who aficionados will know it does play with a 'tinny' sound every now and then which is mainly restricted to the percussive sections.  However, I am sure that is only due to how it was recorded / produced and that it is also being played on a stereo set up.  With regards actual interference, nothing of note, and the clarity overall is very impressive.  It is a very clean vinyl also with only some light hairlines.

It's worth noting how early this first pressing is also.  It doesn't get much earlier than 111/1111!

The laminated cover is in great condition and is the best I have seen.  To be honest it looks better than it does in the photos!  It has no real wear, just some faint edge creases and it has retained its original shape and structure perfectly.  The colours remain strong and vibrant also.  I very doubt the Plastic Bags... inner sleeve is original to this pressing but is nonetheless in excellent shape with just some light creasing and minimal age related fading around a couple of edges.

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a strong glossy visual 'look' with no marks or scratches.  Under a bright light I can see some faint hairlines but they are superficial as they have no impact on the audio.  A couple that are a little more obvious but still faint.  For a vinyl fast approaching 60 years of age it is in great shape!  The run out grooves are very clean and the rough textured Creation labels have no marking just some spindle wear.

Play grading  

The intro on 'Run, Run, Run' plays perfectly and the opening chorus / verse plays with strong deep audio and no interference.  It continues in the same way with no clicks, pops or static although it does have a tinny distortion sound but I am sure that is due to how it was recorded / produced.  I sold one of these last month and it had exactly the same type of sonic quality and it is also a mono record being played through a stereo set up.  There is one light tick towards the end but you could easily miss, I nearly did!  I think Ex+ is an honest appraisal of the audio although perhaps that is under-grading it.

'Boris The Spider' plays with stunning quality from the get go.  The bass intro is flawless and Entwistle's opening vocal is on the same level.  From then on it plays so well with a deep rich mono sound and there is no intrusion on the audio.  Mint-

'I Need You' plays with very strong audio and although it has to be said the drums are a little over-powering here!  Not surprising I guess!  There is perhaps a little of that distorted sound again but it's not distracting, this is a '66 mono record after all!  The 'quieter' moments plays very clearly indeed so I will say Near Mint overall.

The intro on 'Whisky Man' is perfectly and the first vocal is just as clean.  This standard is kept up as it continues and the clarity of sound is very impressive.  For example the quieter vocal section at the end plays with stunning precision.  There is only a minimal amount of that distorted sound so I will say Near Mint

'Heat Wave' plays with strong clear audio and again there is no interference.  It's a powerful track and yet there is very little distortion although maybe I shouldn't use the word distortion.  More the clarity of sound isn't quite on the same level... and I refer you to my previous comments.  One light tick at the end of the fade out that is all.  Near Mint

'Cobwebs And Strange' plays with great quality for a final track on a vinyl of this age.  There is no interference and no obvious inner groove distortion either.  Heavy on percussion as you would expect from a Moon number and these sections play with great power and definition.  Near Mint again.

The intro on 'Don't Look Away' is faultless and the first verse and chorus play with great clarity.  It continues in the same way with zero intrusion and you can't help but admire the quality of the audio.  Each note is so clean precise, you miss nothing, and the instrumental towards the end is just as strong.  The final vocal section again has no interference and Mint- is richly deserved.

'See My Way' plays with wonderful clarity and definition with no sign of any interference.  A rare track from Daltrey and it plays with genuine precision from start to finish.  No minus here this is Mint

The initial guitar part on the 'So Sad About Us' intro has only a minor touch of distortion and the remainder is perfect.  The first vocal is superb and the clarity and definition here is tangible, exceptional sound quality.  From then on it plays so well and of course this is a very 'busy' number and yet the sonic quality has not deteriorated in any way.  This standard is maintained to the very end and it grades as Mint-

The classic vocal intro on 'A Quick One While He's Away' plays with incredible clarity, depth and warmth and the instrumental has no intrusion either.  The next vocal is perfect and the following instrumental has barely any of that 'tinny' sound.  From then on it plays so clearly with no ticks, clicks or pops and there is no background static either.  Yes some 'tinny' sound during the percussive sections but I'm sure that would be improved when played as a 'mono' record.  I sometimes say you know when the clarity is impressive when you notice things you haven't before - during the Soon you'll be home vocal section about 6 minutes there's a very quiet sound effect in the background. a kind of wobble board effect!  Never noticed that before.  This section plays with outstanding clarity and the rest of this early classic plays so well with no interference.  Again there is that 'tinny' sound during the 'louder' passages but don't let that put you off, as I said I'm sure that's to do with the actual recording / production.  In saying that I'm going to say this grades between Ex+ and Near Mint but just to repeat there are no ticks, clicks, pops or static.

The laminated Cover & Inner Sleeve

The fully laminated cover is easily the finest example I have seen.  So often found in poor condition this one has been looked after so well and has no obvious wear.  The edges and spine are in lovely condition and corners are very clean with barely any wear.  The opening edge is also in great shape with hardly any handling wear and the front cover is stunning.  Prone to laminate wear / lifting it has only a handful of minor laminate creases around the edges and the back cover is just as impressive.  It has a little ringwear also which is common but you can only see this when you hold it at a certain angle, it is a minor issue.  A superb example overall.

The poly-lined inner sleeve has no side splits or tears and hardly any marking.  Just a little creasing here and there.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
