The rare mini opera precursor to TOMMY, the WHO’s second LP - "A QUICK ONE" on REACTION 593 002 ~ (Mono 1966)

This is a POLYDOR RECORDS UK pressing on the REACTION label, in stiff, heavy weight 151 gram vinyl and has the matrix numbers:-

"593002 A//2   1               1          11" on side 1 and
"593002 B//1    1      1  : 1" on side 2
(these are shown exactly as they appear on the vinyl; these 593002 numbers are repeated on the labels).

So this is a first pressing, as shown by the above numbers and the heavy and stiff vinyl, only present in pre-issue and early first pressings; it’s from a very early Mother and Stamper set and so most definitely must be a very sound investment for those into that, but it's a very playable record for those actually into the music, (like me!).

This auction then is for a rare and highly collectable LP from my own collection, with the fully laminated, early UK cover, which I have owned from new and which is still in very good playing condition; (I have seen dealers offer some crummy copies of this LP on eBay that suprisingly sold for high prices, I am not a dealer, this is MY LP and I am listing it with a realistic starting value that is a fraction of what collectors are paying for similarly good copies).

The record itself is pressed in heavy grade, stiff vinyl which is still clean and shiny on both sides; the labels are the textured variety and bear some slight grease marking from handling and do have spindle marks, (see the pictures - I have played this after all!), but are the correct silver artist, track details and logo print with satin blue ground, with no stickers or writing on them.

There are a few very, very minor, just discernible (and totally inaudible) *sleeve marks on the record surfaces, (as is typical of records with the plastic lined sleeves of this era), but NO surface noise, NO clicks or jumps, NO crackles or pops and obviously NO scratches!
There is a slight, just visible warp of under 0.5 mm peak to peak at the record’s periphery and a minimal offset to the centre hole, which I estimate to be about 0.6 mm peak to peak so it runs pretty true and plays beautifully; (there is no audible effect from such very low levels of mechanical movement, but I am stating these parameters from now on to further improve the accuracy of my estimates of the records I offer on eBay).

*Surface marks are either a sort of matt area marking over the record surface, (usually from the plastic inner liners of some sleeves and probably due to pressure from adjacent records when stored - caused I believe by migration of the plastisizer from the polythene inner sleeve onto the vinyl surface), or they may be faint lines originating from the withdrawal and reinsertion of the record back into it’s sleeve. Such markings will always be present in a record that has been played and are discernible often only by holding the record at an angle under a strong light, but these cosmetic only and are NOT scratches, which are mechanical damage caused by actions such as dropping or knocking the arm so it skates over the record surface, or worse. Such scratches, as I define them, WILL be clearly visible and will definitely be audible at the very least and I shall state if they are there, as well as defining the level of any surface marking.
I will also always provide the best images I can of the actual record surfaces and labels so that bidders can actually SEE the condition of the record in all respects, (any dust specks you may notice on the images are always inside the damn camera lens assembly!)

The cover is the original fully laminated front and back, Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd. UK printed one, in good condition with just some minor spine and edge creases, but NO corner wear, even at the lower leading and trailing edges, really minimal record entry edge wear, NO shelf wear at all, no writing, no stickers and just a tiny amount of pressure rubbing visible on the cellophane.

This cover is still very good for one that has actually been used and not box stored!

The sleeve is the original, square corners, plastic lined "EMITEX" one with care of records instructions on both sides, in good condition except for a small 15 mm tear at the central hole on one side, some folding and minor age browning.

I have just played this LOUD to check it out once more and I cannot detect any appreciable audible degradation, it still sounds fresh, despite it’s age, which is as it should be really, because I have looked after it carefully and only ever played it on good kit.

Using the Record Collector grading system, the vinyl is thus under EXCELLENT on both sides, so VERY GOOD+ on both sides, the cover is also EXCELLENT and the sleeve VERY GOOD.

Keith Moon’s insane drumming really shows on this LP and it’s full of humour and musical jokes in addition to Pete Townsend’s mini-opera, the precursor to TOMMY; this was my favourite WHO LP though.

I first saw THE WHO when they played as THE HIGH NUMBERS at the Goldhawk Road Social Club in 1964 and later at The Marquee Club and at Putney’s fantastic pop art Pontiac Club in 1965 and I bought the early singles and LP’s as soon as they were issued, (of course!).


So the provenance is good for this record, since I bought it new and so can vouch for it’s history; generally, all my records were purchased new by me and so are from my own personal collection, built up since the early 1960’s and have genuinely been played very little and then only on quality turntables, (Garrard Zero 100, Lab 80 and Goldring GL75), set up with a low tracking force, using Shure, then Grado then Stanton cartridges over the years. All records have been dry stored, vertically, in the dark in a proper custom made record shelving system and only ever played by myself and NEVER loaned to anyone and especially, never, ever partied!

If you are interested in early British R & B and Progressive Rock Bands and the USA West Coast bands of the time then please add me to your favourites as I do have some rarities that I have never seen on eBay. I generally do not go in for all the b******s about rare first pressings and the excessive detailing of group histories that I see other sellers boring eBay members with and will describe the records honestly, just indicating the basics.
This happens to be justified in this case however as this is an early copy!

PS: I see one of these sold recently on eBay for well over £700; that copy was the same as this one in every respect, as far as I can tell and certainly had the same numbers on the vinyl, so grab a bargain!!
