Brief Info: The curious album title ‘Theraphosa blondi’ is the scientific name for the The Goliath birdeater, a spider belonging to the tarantula family and the largest spider by volume in the world. The impressive creature is featured on the front cover.

This was the second album by The Web following the impressive debut ‘Fully Interlocking’. A very mixed album musically featuring a host of different styles and the quite unusual vocal talents of John Watson. Some regard it as a classic and very worthy follow-up to the hugely regarded debut, some are less convinced. For sure, it is a very different album with many influences but highly original. Predictably, not a major seller, hence scarce. This a very fine stereo original and looks and plays impressively, this is the very first example I have had to offer, and one I enjoyed considerably.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: or thereabouts. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This wraps around the folds and ends on the back via the spine, the main back panel is matt and smooth. This album was issued in both mono and stereo, so has the mono/stereo peep-hole on the back. Here filled with the blue inner sleeve to denote a stereo copy. Made with thin card, hence very wear and damage prone. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker, includes the polylined 1970 date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a fine shine, freshness and clarity, it has no lifting with only modest dulling seen under light around the rim shape. A little rubbing to the corner tips, any of the very few creases are fine and light, this only gives gentle clues to age and remains very attractive.

Cover Back: A little grubbiness to the edge areas and again some tip rubbing. Mild impression and dulling around the same, but not cutting ring wear. Minimal rubbing or creasing, the peep-hole is crisp and as-made. A very respectable back to match the impressive front.

Top Edge: Practically unworn, fully laminated and smooth. A little natural bowing on all the folded edges which is somewhat a natural trait of Clarifoil covers, especially if there is no lifting.

Bottom Edge: As above for the actual fold, minor thickening to the card panel end being critical for a storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean with a little consistent thickening as seen viewed end-on. Still reasonably neat and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Mainly solid with a moderate crack near the top corner, but any compression is generally mild, the ends are pinched in manufacture. The text is almost unworn under the solid, clear laminate. A little bowed as stated above, this indeed can be variable depending on room temperature and humidity.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape largely retained. No bashes, any evidence of dinking minor.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this fragile thin card cover. Just enough to politely remind of its considerable age, and personally, I have no qualms with that. One to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the heavy duty polylined Decca inner is also in very fine condition, this is UK patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. Gentle corner creasing only, two undamaged crisp window circles and very clear lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs, this one is date-coded 6-70 (June 1970).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better, this appears little played. Overall a lovely visual copy, being clean with fine shine and quite heavily pressed on the usual high quality Decca vinyl. These top-quality pressings were more able to withstand usage and minor mishaps, but this appears to avoided anything of note. Any surface marks are very fine and faint as seen with more scrutiny under bright angled light, there are no penetrating stylus scratches. The main factor is it plays very impresisvely with hardly anything unwanted. Age and era is always a considerable for these types, and this has survived very well.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive original record plays even above it’s impressive visual grading with very little to fault. Offering lovely clean sound and the stereo mix is impressive. Distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly registered with no tracking issues*, I really enjoyed this one. For clean, largely blemish-free audio quality, this copy could prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. It should please many, if not most collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
