Description

THE VICTIMS – Television Addict b/w (I’m) Flipped Out Over You. Self-issue, MX 46813/MX 46814. Australian release. Issued in early 1978 (recorded in late 1977). PICTURE SLEEVE:  VG, for general use and the price sticker tear/glue residue on the front of the sleeve (it was this way when I got it back in the early 80s), no tears or splits save for the slightly roughed up open end; the sleeve is buffed (slightly shiny) paper stock with the bands name rubber stamped on the front (back side is blank save for the visible ring wear). VINYL:  VG++, for some very light background crackle (once the petal hits the metal you won’t notice it), play graded; small hole center. DESCRIPTION:  Television Addict was the A-side of the debut single (and the only release issued in their lifetime) by The Victims, an early punk rock band from Perth, Western Australia. The song is a mainstay of compilations of Australian punk from the 1970s, and has been recorded by the Hoodoo Gurus, You Am I, The Hellacopters, and Teengenerate. It was co-written by singer-guitarist Dave Faulkner (known at the time as Dave Flick) and drummer James Baker. The slow, menacing, bass line, played by Rudolph V (Dave Cardwell), is also a prominent feature of the recording. The Victims released the single independently in early 1978, with (I'm) Flipped Out Over You as its B-side. Lyrically, Television Addict revolves around a youth "who went out and shot someone", and whose lawyer then attributes his actions to violence on television: "blame the ratings for his crime." The song is, in large part, a satirical comment on the tendency to blame popular culture for crime, rather than individuals, or broader social problems. The song ends by questioning why other social phenomena are not attributed to TV programs: "just because I watch Dinah Shore, doesn't mean my brain has slipped, doesn't mean anything — at all." The band broke up in 1979. Baker soon after joined up with Kim Salmon’s band the Scientists, leaving in early 1981. During the mid-1980s, Baker and Faulkner were briefly reunited in the Hoodoo Gurus, who sometimes performed Television Addict as an encore. The Hoodoo Gurus (without Baker) later recorded Television Addict, and issued it as a bonus track on Crank (2005 re-issue). Television Addict and The Victims rank up there with the first records by the likes of The Saints, Radio Birdman, The Leftovers, Scientists, News, and The Fun Things. Essential Aussie punk!!!

NOTE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS, PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING:

For the most part these 7” singles and EPs come from my personal collection that, though played, has been well taken care of; they were purchased new. The most noticeable use on the sleeves will be near the open end from removal to play and then placing back in the sleeves. While going through my collection for listing I have removed the discs from the original sleeves and placed them in a plain white paper sleeve, placing the original sleeve and disc within an outer plastic sleeve. Even if the disc was originally purchased with a stock company sleeve or plain sleeve, I will include the original sleeve that came with my purchase along with the disc. As for the vinyl, keep in mind that these come from my personal collection and have been played (used but not abused), though I haven’t played most of them for nearly 20 years (or more). I have been playing both sides completely through for grading purposes on these listings and have noted obvious flaws, if any; if I’ve missed something my apologies in advance I am trying my best to properly grade items. Any skips, deep scratches, unplayability due to warpage, audible background noise that is continuous through the complete play, etc. will not be listed. Please e-mail me back with specific details if there is a problem I will gladly allow your return with full refund, minus your shipping cost back to me. Refunds will only be issued once I have received the item back. I worked in a record shop from 74-80 and then set up at record shows thereafter stocking many singles, so most of these items came from distributors or, later on, from dealers who also stocked new singles. By the mid-80s my interest in current singles of punk, garage, psych, and independently released music waned (as did the music itself). For the time being I am concentrating on listing releases from the years 1975 -1985, give or take a bit. I’ve got approximately 500+ singles left to sort through and will list them in small batches of 10-20 per listing on a first come first list basis. Those that don’t sell the first time around will be relisted as a group at a later date. If you have any questions about an item listed please e-mail me. At this time I really can’t answer what items I may have in the future to list as most of the singles are not in any order, due to several moves over the years; I’m taking it a crate at a time. I expect getting through this section of my singles collection will stretch out the rest of this year, so keep checking in. Thanks for looking.

MULTI-ITEM PURCHASERS AND NEW FEE APPLICATIONS

Multi-bid winners/purchasers:  If you combine various formats such as LPs, 7" singles, and CDs, please wait for my eBay invoice for the shipping total before making payment. Shipping discounts apply only to multi-purchases that are paid for in one single payment and shipped in a single package. NEW FEES: The US postal service has recently raised their rates (May 12, 2008), as well as the cost of shipping materials has increased, so I have had to adjust my shipping and handling fees. As I will phase in updating my eBay store items for current shipping and handling charges, if you purchase a newly listed item along with a previously listed store item the current new fee will apply. If you purchase only store items with the old fees I will honor the old fee amount. If you wait for my eBay invoice I will apply the correct fee.
