For sale by no-reserve auction is a copy of the FIRST UK STEREO pressing of the 'WHITE LIGHT, WHITE HEAT' album from 1968 by THE VELVET UNDERGROUND. It is on the VERVE label and has the catalogue number SVLP 9201 indicating that it is the stereo version.
Things that indicate that this is a true first pressing include :
- Glossy cover with skull - "flaps folded" back cover.
- "File under POPULAR : Pop Groups" on top right
- "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Patents Pending S/VLP 9201" on bottom right
- "Here She Comes Now" on the sleeve and side 1 label (not 'There She Comes Now')
- Lou Reed "guitar" credit
- No Warhol credit
- "Sold in U.K. subject to resale price conditions" text on labels.
- No "stereo" text on front cover.
However, sadly, the condition of both the sleeve and vinyl is, I am afraid to say, not very good to say the least. The sleeve is only in overall poor condition. There are quite a few creases, significant edgewear and cornerwear and there is a split on the bottom edge. The rear sleeve is better but there is creasing, some 'grubbiness' and the opening edge is worn. However, the spine is fully readable. Please study all the photos carefully to see the condition for yourself. The labels are in very good condition with just 'spindle trails' indicating that the record has been played frequently. The record has numerous surface scratches and marks and plays on both sides with fairly constant 'crackle'. This may be due to dirt in the grooves so a good clean might improve it ? There are also some deeper marks which result in 'pops' and 'clicks' but on my system both sides played through without jumping or skipping. Side 2 is better than side 1. So, if you are looking for a pristine copy of this excellent album, this one isn't for you. But if you can put up with it's flaws and imperfections and maybe give it a good clean and even try to mend the sleeve then it might be worth a bid on what is quite a rare and sought-after record. It would certainly fill a hole in your record collection until a better copy came along. There is no reserve on the item so it will sell for whatever price it reaches. The album will be wrapped in bubblewrap before posting to ensure that it does not get damaged on its journey. I will dispatch it in a proper record mailer and will post within one working day of purchase by Second Class post so that it gets on its way to you as soon as possible.
