"the velvet underground -etc." is a compilation assembled by the Australian label Plastic Inevitable Records in 1979, drawing on Lou Reed's pre-Velvet Underground recordings and a handful of unreleased VU demos. Side A collects Pickwick-era material from 1964–65 — Reed recording under band names including The Primitives, The Beachnuts, and The Roughnecks — plus one VU track, "Conversation," sourced from Andy Warhol's Index book multimedia package (1966). Side B contains four rough mix demos recorded by the Velvet Underground in 1969, previously available only on the limited White Heat EP (1976), along with "Noise," taken from The East Village Other (1966). The 1969 demos include "Foggy Notion," "Inside Your Heart," "I'm Sticking With You," and "Ferryboat Bill" — recordings that wouldn't reach wide official release until V.U. in 1985.

This is the original 1979 first edition on Plastic Inevitable Records (FIRST-1), identifiable by its distinctive silk-screened cover — a multicolor screen-printed design in orange and navy, not found on the 1981 reissue, which used standard offset printing. The label is the black "numbers" design: concentric rings of white figures on a black background, correct for the first edition.

Lacquers cut by FH — an unidentified Australian cutter — dated September 14, 1979 per the deadwax notation on both sides.
